🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

This job replaces both front headlight bulbs on your Sierra. The bulbs are accessed from the front of the truck after opening the hood, so you do not need to remove the headlamp assembly. Work carefully so you do not touch the glass on the new bulbs.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down first. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Do not touch the glass on the new bulbs. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • If your truck has automatic lighting, make sure the lights stay off while you work.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Work light
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb set - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the headlight switch is off.
  • Let the bulb housing cool before touching it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and find the headlamp access area

  • Open the hood and stand in front of the headlamp you are replacing.
  • Look behind the headlamp housing for the bulb access point.
  • Work one side at a time.

Step 2: Remove the bulb connector

  • Use your hand to press the connector lock tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
  • If it is stuck, gently help it loose with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand to unlock it from the headlamp housing.
  • Pull the bulb straight out.
  • If the bulb has a retaining ring or cover on your truck, remove it first by hand.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing and insert it straight in.
  • Twist the bulb clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same steps on the opposite headlight.
  • Use the same tools and handle the new bulb carefully.

Step 6: Test the lights

  • Turn the headlight switch on and check both new bulbs.
  • Make sure both lights are bright and aimed normally.
  • If one does not light up, recheck the connector and bulb lock.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both low beams and high beams if applicable.
  • Make sure the headlamp covers are seated correctly.
  • If a bulb still does not work, inspect the fuse and connector for damage.
