🔧 Headlight Bulb Replacement - Replacement
Assumption: this covers the two low-beam headlight bulbs. On your Sierra, the bulbs are serviced from behind the headlamp assemblies, so you do not need to remove the whole front bumper for this job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key before starting.
- Let the bulbs cool down first. Halogen bulbs get very hot.
- Do not touch the glass on a new halogen bulb. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
- Work carefully around the battery, air intake, and wiring connectors.
- No battery disconnect is normally required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the lights off and open the hood.
- Have both new bulbs ready before opening the first headlamp housing.
- Replace both sides together for even brightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood and locate the rear bulb covers
- Use the hood release, then secure the hood fully open.
- Look behind each headlamp assembly to find the bulb access area.
- On some trucks, you may need to move the air intake duct slightly for better access on one side.
Step 2: Remove any access parts if needed
- If a duct or cover blocks access, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the fasteners.
- Lift the part out carefully and set it aside.
- Keep every fastener organized.
Step 3: Remove the first bulb
- Reach behind the headlamp assembly and unplug the electrical connector from the bulb.
- Use your hand to twist the bulb base counterclockwise until it unlocks.
- Pull the bulb straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb
- Compare the new bulb to the old one before installing it.
- Insert the new bulb into the opening in the same position.
- Twist it clockwise until it locks in place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector firmly.
- Do not touch the glass portion of the bulb.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same process for the second headlight bulb.
- Make sure both bulbs are fully locked and both connectors are seated.
Step 6: Reinstall any removed access parts
- If you removed an intake duct or cover, reinstall it using the 10mm socket and ratchet.
- Make sure nothing is left loose in the engine bay.
Step 7: Test the lights
- Turn the headlights on and confirm both new bulbs work.
- Check high beam and low beam operation if you disturbed nearby wiring.
- Test both sides before closing the hood.
✅ After Repair
- Verify both headlights are bright and even.
- Check the beam aim against a wall at night if needed.
- If one bulb does not work, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
