🔧 Fusion - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll replace the two front headlight bulbs (left and right) by accessing the rear of each headlamp through the front wheel-well liner. This is usually the quickest way on your Fusion and avoids removing the headlamp assembly.
Assumption: Your Fusion has halogen low-beam bulbs (H11). (If you’re replacing high beams instead, they’re typically 9005.)
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching anything (hot glass can burn you).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life. Use nitrile gloves.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you raise it—never rely only on a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of the car so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (H11 halogen, low beam) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself space in the wheel well (full left when working the right side, full right when working the left side).
- Fender liner = the plastic splash shield inside the wheel well. You’ll peel it back for access.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create access at the wheel well (one side at a time)
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
- (Optional but easier) Lift the front corner you’re working on using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- Use a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 3" extension (1/4") to remove the small screws holding the front portion of the fender liner.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any plastic push-clips. If a clip is stubborn, gently pry the center up with a small flathead screwdriver, then remove the clip.
- Peel the liner back just enough to reach the back of the headlamp. Use a flashlight to locate the bulb area.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) when reinstalling the 7mm liner screws.
Step 2: Remove the old bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Reach behind the headlamp and find the bulb connector.
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb (no yanking on wires).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out.
- Tip: Work by feel; it’s tight.
Step 3: Install the new bulb (important handling)
- Open the new H11 bulb package only when you’re ready to install.
- Hold the bulb by the base (plastic). Do not touch the glass.
- Insert the bulb into the headlamp housing, keeping it aligned with the tabs.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place (it should sit flat and secure).
- Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 4: Quick function test
- Turn the headlamps on and verify the bulb lights.
- If it doesn’t light: turn lights off, re-check the connector seating, and confirm the bulb is fully locked.
Step 5: Reinstall the fender liner
- Reposition the fender liner into place by hand.
- Reinstall push-clips using the trim clip removal tool (press the body in, then press the center pin flush).
- Reinstall the 7mm screws using the 7mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
- Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) with a torque wrench (in-lb).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite headlight.
âś… After Repair
- Turn on low beams and confirm both sides match in brightness and color.
- Check that the fender liner is fully secured (no rubbing on the tire).
- If you replaced only one bulb, keep the old working bulb as a temporary spare.
