🔧 Explorer - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Explorer, the headlight bulb(s) sit in the back of each headlamp housing and can be replaced from under the hood. Most trims use a single halogen bulb per side for both low and high beam, but some models use HID bulbs—steps are slightly different.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes before touching them.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oils can shorten halogen bulb life.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with HID, do not power the lights with parts unplugged; HID systems can produce very high voltage.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of the new bulb. If you do, clean with rubbing alcohol and a lint-free towel.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for halogen; recommended for HID (negative terminal) if you’re unsure.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb (Halogen, typically 9007) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • OR Headlight bulb (HID, bulb type varies by housing) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlamp.
  • Check the bulb type by reading the marking on the old bulb base (common halogen marking: 9007).
  • If you confirm HID (there’s a metal “bulb/igniter” setup and a ballast), disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the headlamp housing (one side at a time)

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the two upper headlamp retaining bolts.
  • Set the bolts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
  • Carefully pull the headlamp housing straight forward to release the locating pins.
  • Wiggle gently—don’t pry the lens.

Step 2: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector

  • At the back of the headlamp, press the connector lock tab and pull the connector off the bulb.
  • If it’s tight, use a trim clip removal tool to help lift the tab—do not yank the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Halogen path (most common): Turn the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • HID path: Remove any dust cap, then release the bulb retainer (varies by design) and pull the bulb straight out. Do not twist hard—HID bulbs can be fragile.
  • A “retainer” is the ring/clip that locks the bulb in place.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the housing slots, insert fully, then lock it:
    • Halogen: Turn clockwise until it stops and sits flush.
    • HID: Reinstall/lock the retainer and refit the dust cap.
  • If using it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/locks.
  • Do a gentle tug test to confirm it’s fully seated.

Step 6: Reinstall the headlamp housing

  • Guide the housing back into place, lining up the locating pins.
  • Reinstall the two bolts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (inch-pound).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1–6 for the other headlight.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify low beam and high beam operation on both sides.
  • If you disconnected the battery for HID, reconnect it using a 10mm socket and confirm all lights work.
  • At night, park 20–25 feet from a wall and confirm both beams look even. If one looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully seated.
  • Watch for moisture inside the lens over the next day—make sure any dust cap is installed correctly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$280 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $30-$140 (parts only)
