🔧 Altima - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Altima restores nighttime visibility and keeps the beam color even side-to-side. The bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp housings in the engine bay, with limited space on the passenger side.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-60 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition fully off before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if the headlights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair, but keep the headlight switch off.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim removal tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulbs H11 halogen - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • 📦 Replace both low-beam bulbs together so brightness and color match.
  • 🔎 A trim removal tool is a flat plastic pry tool used to lift plastic clips without scratching parts.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to release the safety latch at the front of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlamp housing.

Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Low-Beam Bulb

  • Use a flashlight to find the low-beam bulb socket on the rear of the driver-side headlamp housing.
  • The low-beam bulb is the H11 bulb installed in the projector-style low-beam section.
  • Identify the electrical connector attached to the back of the bulb.
  • Take a quick phone photo first.

Step 3: Disconnect the Driver-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
  • Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb.
  • If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling. Do not pull on the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb base.
  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • No fasteners are used here, so there is no torque specification.

Step 5: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new H11 bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing.
  • Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Use your fingers to reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not force the bulb tabs.

Step 6: Move Items for Passenger-Side Access

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the space behind the passenger-side headlamp housing.
  • If the intake duct blocks access, use a flat trim removal tool to lift the plastic push clips from the duct.
  • Move the intake duct aside carefully by hand.
  • A push clip is a reusable plastic fastener with a center pin that locks it into place.

Step 7: Disconnect the Passenger-Side Bulb Connector

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the passenger-side bulb connector.
  • Pull the connector straight rearward off the bulb.
  • If it is stuck, gently wiggle the connector while pulling on the connector body only.

Step 8: Remove the Passenger-Side Bulb

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb base.
  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • No fasteners are used here, so there is no torque specification.

Step 9: Install the New Passenger-Side Bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the new H11 bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing.
  • Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
  • Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Use your fingers to reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall Any Moved Intake Duct Pieces

  • Use your hands to place the intake duct back into its original position.
  • Use your fingers to reinstall the plastic push clips.
  • Press each clip down until it sits flush.
  • No torque specification applies to the plastic push clips.

Step 11: Test the Headlights

  • Use the headlight switch to turn the low beams on.
  • Stand in front of your Altima and confirm both new bulbs turn on.
  • Check that both beams look even and are not flickering.
  • Turn the headlights back off when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Make sure both bulb connectors are fully seated and clicked in.
  • ✅ Confirm no tools or loose clips are left in the engine bay.
  • ✅ If one bulb does not work, turn the headlights off and recheck that connector first.
  • ✅ No scan tool reset, coding, or infotainment setting is required.
