🔧 Focus - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Focus, the “headlight bulbs” can mean the low beams and/or high beams, and the bulb type can be halogen or HID depending on the headlamp option. The access is from behind the headlamp inside the engine bay; on some versions there’s very tight clearance, so you may need to move the air inlet/cover.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching.
- ⚠️ Never touch the glass of halogen/HID bulbs with bare fingers; oils shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your Focus has HID low beams (projector lens, very bright white/blue), disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before unplugging the igniter/ballast.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools clear of the radiator fan area.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulbs (match your headlamp type: Halogen or HID) - Qty: 2
- High beam bulbs (if you’re replacing highs too) - Qty: 2
- Headlamp rear dust caps (only if cracked/missing) - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park (or in gear), and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and identify which bulbs you’re replacing: low beam, high beam, or both.
- Identify low beam type:
- Projector lens + very bright white/blue light usually indicates HID.
- Reflector housing + warmer/yellowish light is usually halogen.
- If HID: disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket. (Negative cable is the “-” terminal.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Get access behind the headlamp
- Use a flashlight to locate the rear of the headlamp and the round dust cap (if equipped).
- If space is tight on either side, remove the nearby air inlet/snorkel or cover:
- Use a trim clip removal tool or flat-blade screwdriver to pop up push-pins/clips.
- Use an 8mm socket to remove any small bolts (if present).
Step 2: Remove the rear dust cap (if equipped)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Twist the dust cap counterclockwise by hand and pull it off.
- Set the cap aside where it won’t get dirty (it keeps moisture out).
Step 3: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector tab and pull straight back.
- If it won’t release, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently on the locking tab. Don’t pry on wires.
Step 4: Remove the bulb (choose the path that matches your Focus)
- Halogen low beam/high beam:
- Twist the bulb counterclockwise about 1/8 turn and pull it straight out.
- Keep the old bulb for matching the new one at install.
- HID low beam:
- Confirm the battery negative cable is disconnected (use a 10mm socket).
- Twist the igniter/retainer counterclockwise and remove it, then pull the HID bulb straight out.
- Handle by the base only.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (do not touch the glass)
- Compare the new bulb to the old bulb to confirm the same locking tabs/base.
- Insert the bulb into the housing, keeping the tabs aligned.
- Lock it in place by turning clockwise until fully seated (snug by hand).
- If using dielectric grease, apply a tiny amount to the connector seal (not on the bulb).
Step 6: Reconnect connector and reinstall dust cap
- Push the connector on until it clicks (use your hands only).
- Reinstall the dust cap and twist clockwise until fully seated.
Step 7: Reinstall any covers/ducting removed
- Reinstall bolts using an 8mm socket, then Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Reinstall push-pins/clips by pressing them back in by hand (use the trim clip removal tool if needed).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-7 for the second headlight so brightness/color matches.
Step 9: If you disconnected the battery (HID), reconnect it
- Reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low and high beam.
- Check that the dust caps are fully seated (prevents moisture/fogging).
- At night, confirm beam aim looks even; if one side is “off,” the bulb may not be fully locked in.
