🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Replacing both front headlight bulbs restores nighttime visibility and keeps the beam pattern even side-to-side. On your Equinox, the bulb access is from behind the headlamp housings, and the job is usually straightforward once you know the correct side-specific access space.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlight switch off and let the bulbs cool before touching anything.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers; skin oils shorten bulb life.
  • If your Equinox has factory HID or LED headlamps, the bulb type and procedure are different.
  • Keep the ignition off while you work so the lights cannot switch on unexpectedly.
  • If you need to move any intake ducting for access, make sure it is fully reinstalled before driving.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Replacement headlight bulbs, matched left and right
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flat trim tool
  • Small flashlight
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and support it fully.
  • If one side feels tight, make room first by gently moving any nearby air duct or electrical cover using the flat trim tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the back of each headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlight housing.
  • Use the small flashlight to find the bulb dust cover or bulb connector.
  • If the driver side is crowded by intake parts, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen any small retaining fastener you must move for access.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Use your nitrile gloves before touching the new bulb.
  • Disconnect the bulb connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.
  • Rotate the bulb counterclockwise if it is a twist-lock style, or release the retaining spring if equipped.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
  • Do not force the bulb.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Compare the new bulb to the old one to confirm the base and connector match.
  • Insert the new bulb into the housing without touching the glass.
  • Rotate it clockwise to lock it in, or secure the retaining spring if equipped.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps for the other headlight bulb.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs so the light output matches on both sides.

Step 5: Reassemble any moved parts

  • If you removed any intake ducting or a small cover, reinstall it now.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to snug any fastener you loosened.
  • Make sure every clip seats fully.

Step 6: Test the lights

  • Turn the headlights on and confirm both bulbs illuminate.
  • Check low beam, high beam, and parking lights to make sure everything works correctly.
  • Verify the beam pattern is even on both sides.

✅ After Repair

  • Close the hood and take a quick nighttime or shaded-area visibility check.
  • If one bulb does not light, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
  • If the dash shows a lamp warning, cycle the ignition off and back on once after confirming both bulbs work.
