🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing headlight bulbs is a quick job, but access can be tight behind the headlamp housings on your Tacoma. The key is using the correct bulb type and not touching the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil shortens bulb life).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare hands; use clean gloves.
- ⚠️ If you remove the battery for access, disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent shorts.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet

- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Trim clip removal tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the headlight stalk to OFF.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If space is tight on the passenger side, be prepared to remove the battery hold-down (10mm) for more room.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify your bulb type (so you buy/install the correct one)
- Use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlamp and the wiring plug.
- Remove one bulb first (Steps 3–5) and read the bulb number stamped on the plastic/metal base (examples: 9003/H4, 9006, 9005).
- Match the number on the old bulb exactly.
Step 2: Create working room (only if needed)
- If you can’t comfortably get your hand behind the headlamp, remove the passenger-side battery hold-down:
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension for ratchet to remove the hold-down bolts, then lift the hold-down off.
- Lift the battery out carefully (it’s heavy). If you disconnect it, remove the negative terminal first with a 10mm socket.
- When reinstalling the hold-down, Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
Step 3: Unplug the headlight bulb connector
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the wiring connector on the bulb.
- Press the lock tab and pull the connector straight back. If it’s stuck, gently wiggle it—don’t yank the wires.
- If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers lightly to help press the tab (don’t crush the connector).
Step 4: Remove the bulb dust cover (if equipped)
- Some housings have a rubber/plastic dust cap behind the bulb.
- Twist/pull it off by hand. If clips are in the way, use a trim clip removal tool to move harness clips aside.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- If your bulb is a twist-lock style (common for 9005/9006): Rotate the bulb counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- If your bulb uses a retaining wire clip (common for 9003/H4): Flip the metal wire clip down and out, then pull the bulb out.
- Note the bulb’s orientation before removal.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (clean handling)
- Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
- Lock it in place:
- For twist-lock: rotate clockwise until it stops.
- For wire-clip: swing the clip back into place until it latches.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with a clean lint-free cloth (dry) before installing.
Step 7: Reinstall dust cover and reconnect the connector
- Reinstall the dust cap by hand (make sure it seals evenly all around).
- Push the wiring connector on until it clicks/locks.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps for the other headlight. Replace bulbs in pairs so color and brightness match.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights on and verify operation (low beam and high beam).
- Check that both sides are the same color/brightness.
- If a bulb doesn’t light, recheck the connector is fully seated and the bulb is fully locked.
- If you removed the battery, confirm the hold-down is secure and the terminals are tight.
