Step-by-step headlamp removal, bulb swap tips, required tools/parts, and key safety precautions for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014
🔧 F-150 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each headlamp assembly, swap the bulb(s), then reinstall and test. The key is not touching the new bulb’s glass and making sure the wiring connector fully locks back in.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool 10-15 minutes before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your A4—(skip)—if your F-150 has factory HID, disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the HID bulb/igniter.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses; small clips and dirt can fall when the lamp pops forward.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Trim clip removal tool
- Nitrile gloves

- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (Halogen H13) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- OR Headlight bulb (Factory HID D3S) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- If you have factory HID: use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- Identify your headlight type: Halogen usually has a simple reflector housing; factory HID usually has a projector lens and HID warning label on/near the headlamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the headlamp mounting bolts
- Use safety glasses and a flashlight to look at the top of the headlamp.
- Use the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet to remove the headlamp retaining bolts.
- Set the bolts aside where they won’t fall into the engine bay.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) during reinstallation.
Step 2: Pull the headlamp assembly forward
- Grip the headlamp housing with both hands and pull straight forward to release the locating pins.
- If it feels stuck, use a trim clip removal tool (a small prying tool made to pop clips without breaking them) to gently help it move—do not pry on the painted fender.
- Pull it forward just enough to reach the bulb(s) behind it.
Step 3: Remove the old headlight bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the bulb electrical connector (press the locking tab, then pull).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (Halogen H13 path)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new Halogen H13 bulb into the housing (tabs must line up).
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks fully.
- Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Don’t force it—align tabs first.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (Factory HID D3S path)
- With nitrile gloves on, remove the rear cover (if equipped) by twisting it off by hand.
- Carefully disconnect the HID igniter/connector from the bulb (pull straight off—no twisting hard).
- Release the HID bulb retainer (style varies), remove the old bulb, and install the new Factory HID D3S bulb in the same orientation.
- Reinstall the retainer, reconnect the igniter/connector, and reinstall the rear cover by hand.
- HID parts are fragile—be gentle.
Step 6: Reinstall the headlamp assembly
- Slide the headlamp back into place, making sure the locating pins seat fully.
- Reinstall the bolts using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-6 for the other headlamp so both bulbs match in color and brightness.
âś… After Repair
- If you disconnected the battery (HID): reconnect it using the 10mm socket.
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both sides work on low and high beam.
- Check that the headlamp housings sit evenly and don’t wiggle.
- At night, confirm the beam pattern looks even; if it’s way off, the lamp may not be fully seated.
