Step-by-step DIY guide with bulb type tips (halogen vs HID), tools list, and key torque specs for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
🔧 Optima - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
Replacing the headlight bulbs is usually done from under the hood by removing a dust cover behind each headlamp, unplugging the bulb, and installing a new one. Bulb type can vary by headlamp package on your Optima, so match the new bulb to the old one before installing.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let the bulbs cool (they get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs—skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If your Optima has HID/Xenon headlights: treat them as high-voltage and disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal first.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and keep tools away from the hybrid orange cables.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension for 1/4" drive ratchet
- Flat trim tool
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight low-beam bulb(s) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Headlight dust cover seal (if damaged) - Qty: 0–2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the car OFF.
- Open the hood and set your flashlight so you can see behind the headlamp.
- If equipped with HID/Xenon headlights: use a 10mm socket to disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes. Negative terminal is the “-” post.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm what bulb type you have
- Use a flashlight to look at the back of the headlamp for a bulb label, or remove one bulb first and match it at the parts counter.
- Common setups vary by headlamp package, so matching the old bulb is the safest way to get the correct part.
Step 2: Create access (if needed)
- If your hands don’t fit behind the passenger-side headlamp, remove the intake snorkel/clips using a flat trim tool.
- If the driver-side is tight, you may need to loosen a nearby cover/bracket using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Reinstall any 10mm bolts later and Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cover
- Reach behind the headlamp and remove the round dust cap/cover by turning it counterclockwise by hand.
- If it’s stuck, use nitrile gloves for extra grip. Don’t pry on the housing.
Step 4: Disconnect the bulb electrical connector
- Press the connector tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb.
- If there’s a locking tab, press it with your thumb—don’t pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Halogen-style (most common): twist the bulb counterclockwise and pull it out.
- HID/Xenon-style (if equipped): turn the bulb/igniter assembly counterclockwise to unlock, then pull straight out carefully.
- Use a flashlight to confirm how it unlocks before forcing it.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves and install the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
- Lock it in place by turning clockwise until it fully seats.
- If you accidentally touch halogen bulb glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully before installing.
Step 7: Reconnect the connector and reinstall the dust cover
- Push the connector onto the bulb until it clicks/feels fully seated.
- Reinstall the dust cover and hand-tighten it snugly to keep moisture out.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–7 for the other headlamp.
Step 9: If you disconnected the 12V battery (HID/Xenon)
- Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5–6 Nm (44–53 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Check that the dust covers are fully seated (prevents fogging/condensation).
- If one side looks dimmer or the beam pattern is odd, the bulb may not be fully locked in—turn lights OFF and re-seat it.
