🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

This guide covers replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your F-150. The bulbs are accessible from the back of the headlamp assembly, but space is tight, so taking your time helps prevent broken tabs and burned fingers.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Do not touch the glass on halogen bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Work with the key off and the parking brake set.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this job.
  • If one bulb is burned out, the other is often close behind. Replace both sides together.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flashlight

  • Low beam headlight bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is cool.
  • Put on gloves before handling the new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlamp assembly.
  • If the washer reservoir or intake duct limits access, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any nearby air duct fasteners as needed.
  • Work slowly in tight spaces.

Step 2: Remove the old bulb

  • Reach behind the headlamp and unplug the bulb connector by hand.
  • Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise with your hand and pull it straight out.
  • Set the old bulb aside without touching the glass if it is halogen.

Step 3: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves and handle the new bulb by the base only.
  • Insert the new bulb into the headlamp opening and rotate it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Do not force the connector.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same process for the opposite headlight bulb.
  • Make sure both bulbs sit fully seated and locked.

Step 5: Reassemble and test

  • Reinstall any air duct or access pieces using the 10mm socket and ratchet if you removed them.
  • Close the hood.
  • Turn on the low beams and confirm both sides work.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both low beams from the front of the truck.
  • Verify the new bulbs are seated evenly.
  • If one side does not light, recheck the connector and bulb lock position.
  • If the beam looks very dim, the bulb may not be fully seated.
