🔧 Impreza - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
Replacing your A4’s headlight bulbs means accessing the back of each headlamp housing, removing the old bulb, and installing a new one without touching the glass. Your Impreza may have either halogen low beams or HID (xenon) low beams depending on headlamp option, so I’m including both paths below.
Assumption: Stock headlamps; follow the matching bulb type you find on your car.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.7-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ If you have HID (xenon) low beams, the system can generate very high voltage—turn lights OFF and disconnect the battery negative cable before touching the bulb/igniter.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of any bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. If you do touch it, clean with isopropyl alcohol.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamps cool before working; housings and bulbs get hot.
- ⚠️ Support the car safely if you access through the wheel well (use jack stands, not just a jack).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Trim clip remover (specialty)
- Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- 21mm socket
- Torque wrench (10-150 Nm range)
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Halogen low beam bulb (H11) - Qty: 2
- Halogen high beam bulb (9005) - Qty: 2
- OR HID (xenon) low beam bulb (D2S) - Qty: 2
- Isopropyl alcohol wipes - Qty: 1
- Replacement plastic push clips (fender liner) - Qty: 4
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
- Turn the lighting switch OFF and remove the key.
- If you have HID low beams: open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Wait 5 minutes before touching HID parts.
- Plan your access: you can usually reach bulbs from the engine bay, but the wheel-well access is often easier for hands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify your bulb type (quick check)
- Open the hood and look at the back of the headlamp.
- If you see a large round cap and “H11/9005 style” plug-in connector, you likely have halogen.
- If you see an igniter/ballast-style connector and a metal-retained bulb base (often labeled D2S), you have HID low beams.
- Use a flashlight to read markings on the bulb base/cap area.
Step 2: (Optional but easier) Create access through the wheel well
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts 1/2 turn using a 21mm socket and torque wrench (used here as a breaker) while the car is on the ground.
- Lift the front corner with a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum).
- Remove the wheel using a 21mm socket and 1/4" ratchet (or your ratchet that fits).
- Remove the front fender liner access clips/screws using a trim clip remover (specialty) (a forked tool that pops plastic clips out) and Phillips #2 screwdriver, then peel the liner back enough to reach the rear of the headlamp.
- When reinstalling the wheel later: Torque to 88 N·m (65 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Replace the halogen low beam bulb (H11) (if equipped)
- Reach the low-beam bulb at the rear of the headlamp housing.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use nitrile gloves for grip).
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
- Install the new H11 bulb: insert it fully, then rotate clockwise to lock.
- Reconnect the connector until it clicks.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it using isopropyl alcohol wipes and let it dry.
Step 4: Replace the halogen high beam bulb (9005) (if equipped)
- Locate the high-beam bulb (often closer to the inner side of the housing).
- Disconnect the connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back.
- Rotate the bulb counterclockwise to unlock, then remove it.
- Install the new 9005 bulb, rotate clockwise to lock, then reconnect the plug.
- Replace bulbs in pairs for best color match.
Step 5: Replace the HID (xenon) low beam bulb (D2S) (if equipped)
- Confirm the battery negative cable is disconnected (use a 10mm socket if needed).
- Remove the rear dust cap (if present) by twisting/pulling it off by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
- Disconnect the igniter/connector from the rear of the bulb by twisting/pulling as designed (do not pry on wires).
- Release the bulb retaining spring or retainer (design varies) and carefully remove the bulb straight out.
- Install the new D2S bulb in the same orientation (tabs must seat fully), then re-latch the retainer.
- Reconnect the igniter/connector, then reinstall the dust cap.
- Do not touch the bulb glass; if touched, clean with isopropyl alcohol wipes.
Step 6: Reassemble the wheel well (if removed)
- Reposition the liner and reinstall clips using a trim clip remover (specialty) and Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Install the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
- Lower the car, then Torque to 88 N·m (65 ft-lbs) in a star pattern using a torque wrench (10-150 Nm range).
Step 7: Restore power (HID only) and function-check
- Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
- Turn the headlights ON and verify low beam and high beam operation on both sides.
✅ After Repair
- Verify both low beams match in color and brightness.
- Check high beams and turn signals to confirm you didn’t bump another connector loose.
- At night on a flat road, confirm the beam aim looks even left-to-right; if it’s noticeably off, the bulb may not be fully seated/locked.
- If a new bulb doesn’t light: re-check the connector seating and bulb lock position before assuming the bulb is bad.
💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$300 (parts + labor, halogen) / $250-$650 (HID)
DIY Cost: $25-$90 (halogen pair) / $80-$240 (HID pair)
You Save: $95-$410 by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.2 hours.
