🔧 Frontier - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Frontier, the headlight bulbs sit behind each headlamp housing in the engine bay. You’ll remove the electrical connector, twist the bulb out, then install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and do not touch the new bulb glass; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep keys out of ignition so lights can’t turn on accidentally.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery: remove negative terminal first and reinstall it last.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- 10mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 3" extension
- Flat trim tool
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (H13/9008 halogen) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- Decide if you want to disconnect the battery (optional): use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal and move it aside so it can’t spring back.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which bulb you’re replacing
- Your Frontier’s main headlight bulb is a dual-beam bulb (low and high beam in one bulb) typically H13/9008.
- If you want, tell me: are you replacing the main headlight bulbs (low/high) or the small parking/turn bulbs? I can tailor the steps.
Step 2: Access the back of the headlamp (passenger side first)
- Use a flashlight to locate the bulb socket at the back of the passenger headlamp.
- If space is tight, remove the intake snorkel/duct fasteners using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension, then move the duct slightly for hand room.
- Use a flat trim tool to gently pop any push-clips if equipped.
- Tip: Take a quick photo before unplugging.
Step 3: Unplug the headlight connector
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the bulb.
- If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently while holding the connector (not the wires).
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Grab the bulb’s plastic base and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the housing.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the bulb’s 3 locating tabs match the housing slots.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (no glass touching)
- Still wearing nitrile gloves, insert the new bulb into the housing, lining up the tabs.
- Twist clockwise until it stops and feels fully locked.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the connector seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reconnect and test (before reassembly)
- Plug the connector back on until it clicks.
- If you disconnected the battery, reinstall the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Turn the headlights on and confirm low beam and high beam work on that side.
Step 7: Repeat on the driver side
- Use the flashlight to locate the driver-side bulb at the back of the headlamp.
- Repeat: unplug connector, twist bulb out, install new bulb, reconnect, and test.
Step 8: Reinstall any ducts/clips you moved
- Reposition the intake duct and reinstall fasteners using a 10mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3" extension.
- Reinstall any push-clips by pressing them in by hand (use the flat trim tool only if needed).
✅ After Repair
- Check low beams and high beams on both sides.
- Make sure both bulbs look equally bright and the beam pattern matches side-to-side.
- Take a short night drive and confirm you have good road lighting without blinding oncoming traffic.
