🔧 RAV4 - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your RAV4 is a straightforward job done from behind the headlight housings in the engine bay. Doing both at the same time is smart because bulbs age together, and you’ll get even brightness and color.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🛑 Let the bulbs cool; halogen bulbs get extremely hot.
- 🛑 Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life. If you touch it, clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
- 🛑 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep tools away from the battery positive terminal.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Headlight bulb (low beam) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the hood.
- Use a flashlight to identify which bulb you’re replacing: the low beam is the main headlight used at night (not the high beam).
- If your RAV4 has a plastic air duct/cover blocking access on the passenger side, be ready to remove it with a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create working room (if needed)
- On the passenger side, if an air intake duct/resonator is in the way, remove its plastic push clips using a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove any retaining bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 6" extension, then lift the duct/box out.
- Set clips/bolts in a cup so they don’t vanish.
Step 2: Disconnect the headlight bulb connector
- Reach behind the headlight housing and locate the electrical connector on the back of the low beam bulb.
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight back by hand.
- If it’s stubborn, gently help it with needle-nose pliers (pull on the connector body, not the wires).
Step 3: Remove the bulb dust cover (if equipped)
- If there is a rubber/plastic dust cap, twist it off by hand and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- Release the bulb retainer (either a twist-lock bulb base or a wire spring clip, depending on housing).
- If it’s a twist-lock style, rotate the bulb base counterclockwise by hand and pull the bulb out.
- If it’s a spring-clip style, press and unhook the clip by hand, then swing it open and remove the bulb.
Step 5: Install the new bulb (don’t touch the glass)
- Put on mechanic gloves and install the new bulb in the same orientation as the old one.
- Seat the bulb fully, then lock it in place (twist clockwise or re-latch the spring clip).
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, clean it using isopropyl alcohol (70%+) and a lint-free cloth, then let it dry.
Step 6: Reinstall dust cover and reconnect the connector
- Reinstall the dust cap by hand (if equipped) and make sure it seals all the way around.
- Push the electrical connector on until it clicks.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–6 for the opposite headlight.
Step 8: Reinstall any removed intake ducting
- Reinstall the duct/box and tighten bolts using a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) (snug, not tight).
- Reinstall push clips by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Turn headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Switch to high beams to confirm you didn’t unplug the wrong connector.
- At night, check beam aim on a wall; if one side looks “off,” the bulb may not be seated correctly—recheck the lock/clip.
