🔧 Tacoma - Headlight Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
On your Tacoma, the headlight bulb is serviced from inside the engine bay (no bumper removal). You’ll unplug the bulb connector, twist the bulb out, and install a new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn headlights OFF and let bulbs cool 10+ minutes (they get extremely hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers—skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ If you must remove the battery for access, disconnect the negative terminal first.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip remover
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts

- Headlight bulbs (halogen, dual-beam) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and confirm which bulb you’re replacing: the headlight bulb is the larger bulb at the back of the headlight housing.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the back of the headlight (choose the side)
- Use a flashlight to look behind the headlight housing and locate the bulb connector.
- If access is tight, remove the nearby intake snorkel/duct or filler neck clips using a trim clip remover.
- If there are small bolts holding a duct in the way, remove them with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
Step 2: Unplug the headlight bulb connector
- Grip the connector (not the wires) and pull it straight off the bulb.
- If it has a lock tab, press the tab with your thumb while pulling the connector off.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Rotate the bulb base counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull the bulb straight out.
- Tip: Note the bulb’s “tab” position.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (don’t touch the glass)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one (the tabs must line up).
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
- If you accidentally touch the glass, clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before installing.
Step 5: Reconnect and reassemble
- Push the connector back onto the bulb until fully seated.
- Reinstall any ducting/clips you removed using the trim clip remover and any bolts with the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
Step 6: Repeat on the other headlight
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite side.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for matching color.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams work.
- Switch to high beams and confirm both high beams work (same bulb on many Tacoma setups).
- At night, verify the beams look even and not unusually high/low (aim usually doesn’t change from a bulb swap).
