🔧 Sonata - Headlight Bulb Replacement

On your Sonata, “headlight bulbs” can mean replaceable halogen bulbs (low/high beam) or a non-serviceable LED headlamp unit (no bulb to swap). I’ll give you both paths—first confirm which headlamp type you have so you don’t buy the wrong parts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF, remove the key/fob from the area, and let lights cool 10+ minutes (bulbs get very hot).
  • ⚠️ Do not touch any orange high-voltage cables/connectors in the engine bay (they’re for the hybrid system).
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves—skin oil on halogen glass can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Do not look directly into an operating headlamp.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low beam headlight bulb (halogen type, if equipped) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • High beam headlight bulb (halogen type, if equipped) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Headlamp dust cover seal (if damaged) - Qty: 2
  • Complete headlamp assembly (LED type, if equipped) - Left or Right - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and use a flashlight to look at the back of each headlamp: if you see a round twist-off dust cap and a bulb connector, you have replaceable bulbs; if the unit is sealed with no service cap, it’s LED (no bulb service).
  • If access is tight on one side, be ready to remove a small air duct or cover using a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which headlamp type you have

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the rear of the headlamp housing.
  • If there’s a twist-off dust cap and a bulb connector: follow the Halogen bulb steps below.
  • If there is no service cap and the rear looks sealed with a large module/heat sink: skip to the LED headlamp notes (bulb replacement isn’t possible).

Step 2: Make working room (only if needed)

  • Remove any plastic air duct/cover that blocks your hand access.
  • Pop plastic clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • Remove 10mm bolts with a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4").
  • Set clips/bolts in a cup.

Step 3: Halogen bulb removal (low beam or high beam)

  • Remove the rear dust cap by turning it counterclockwise by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip).
  • Disconnect the bulb electrical connector by pulling it straight off (wiggle gently with nitrile gloves).
  • Unlock the bulb (usually a counterclockwise twist) and pull it straight out.
  • Don’t force it—recheck the lock tabs.

Step 4: Install the new halogen bulb

  • With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Lock it in place (usually clockwise twist until it stops).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector firmly.
  • Reinstall the dust cap fully—this keeps moisture out.
  • If you touched the glass, replace it.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Replace bulbs in pairs (left and right) so color/brightness match.

Step 6: If your Sonata has LED headlamps (no bulb service)

  • If the headlamp is LED, there is no replaceable “bulb” for the main beam—typically the fix is replacing the headlamp assembly (or LED module if serviced separately on your exact unit).
  • Before buying parts, use a flashlight and tell me: is the failed light the low beam, high beam, or a separate DRL strip? I can point you to the correct serviceable component (if any).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the car ON and test low beams, high beams, and turn signals.
  • Check that the dust caps are fully seated (no gaps).
  • At night, confirm both beams aim evenly; if one looks off after major disassembly, a headlamp aiming check may be needed.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor) for halogen bulb replacement

DIY Cost: $30-$120 (parts only) for a pair of halogen bulbs

You Save: $90-$130 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
