🔧 Headlight Bulbs - Replacement

Replacing both headlight bulbs is a straightforward repair from the engine bay on your Corolla. The job mainly involves accessing the back of each headlamp, unplugging the bulb, and installing the new one without touching the glass.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the headlights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them; halogen bulbs get very hot.
  • Do not touch the glass on a new bulb. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • Keep the ignition off while unplugging and reconnecting the headlamp connector.
  • If access is tight, work carefully around the battery and nearby wiring.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Headlight bulb, left - Qty: 1
  • Headlight bulb, right - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the hood and let the lamps cool if they were recently on.
  • Use a flashlight so you can see the bulb tabs clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the back of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the rear of each headlight assembly.
  • Remove any plastic cover or rubber dust cap by hand if equipped.
  • Keep the work area clean and dry.

Step 2: Disconnect the bulb

  • Use your hand to press the connector tab and pull the electrical connector straight off the bulb.
  • If the connector feels stuck, wiggle it gently instead of pulling on the wires.

Step 3: Remove the old bulb

  • Twist the bulb counterclockwise by hand and pull it straight out of the housing.
  • Do not force it. The bulb should come out with a light twist.
  • Note how the bulb sits before removal.

Step 4: Install the new bulb

  • Put on clean gloves and line up the new bulb in the same position as the old one.
  • Insert the bulb fully, then twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks into place.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the bulb.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps for the other headlight bulb.
  • Make sure both bulbs are seated fully and both connectors are locked.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the headlights on and verify both bulbs work.
  • Check low beam aim on a flat wall or garage door.
  • If one side does not light, recheck the connector and bulb seating.
  • If the new bulb flickers, inspect the connector for looseness or corrosion.
