🔧 Corolla - Headlight Bulb Replacement
On your Corolla, the headlight bulbs can be replaced from the engine bay without removing the bumper. You’ll unplug the old bulb, twist it out, and install the new bulb without touching the glass.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: replacing both low-beam bulbs (H11) as a pair.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let the headlight area cool 10-15 minutes (bulbs get very hot).
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ If a connector is tight, pull on the plug body—do not yank the wires.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required, but keep the headlight switch OFF during the job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
- Clean microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam headlight bulb (H11) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch to OFF and remove the key (or keep the fob away from the car).
- Open the hood and use a flashlight to locate the back of each headlight housing.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the low-beam bulb (each side)
- Use a flashlight to find the low-beam bulb socket at the rear of the headlight assembly (it sits toward the outer/lower area of the housing).
- If there’s a rubber dust boot/cover on the back, pull it off by hand and set it aside on a clean microfiber towel.
Step 2: Unplug the bulb connector
- Grip the electrical connector and pull it straight off the bulb (use nitrile gloves for better grip).
- If it has a small lock tab, press the tab with your gloved thumb, then pull the connector off.
- Wiggle gently; don’t pull wires.
Step 3: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the bulb base and twist it counterclockwise about 1/8 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Place the old bulb on the clean microfiber towel.
Step 4: Install the new bulb (H11)
- With nitrile gloves on, insert the new bulb into the housing (line up the tabs on the bulb base with the slots in the headlight).
- Twist clockwise until it locks in place (snug and fully seated).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it clean with the clean microfiber towel.
Step 5: Reconnect and seal
- Push the electrical connector back onto the bulb until fully seated.
- If you’re using it, apply a tiny dab of dielectric grease inside the connector opening (this helps prevent corrosion).
- Reinstall the rubber dust boot/cover by hand (make sure it’s evenly seated all the way around to keep moisture out).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Use the flashlight and repeat Steps 1-5 for the other headlight so both bulbs match in brightness and color.
Optional: If you meant the high beams instead
- The high-beam bulb type is typically 9005 on your Corolla.
- Replacement is the same idea: unplug connector, twist bulb out, install new bulb, reconnect, and reseal (use nitrile gloves and a flashlight).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and verify both low beams work.
- Switch to high beams and verify operation (even if you didn’t replace them).
- Check that any dust boots/covers are fully seated (this prevents fogging and water inside the housing).
- At night, confirm the light pattern looks even left-to-right; if something looks “off,” the bulb may not be fully seated.
