🔧 Kicks - Front Window Regulator Replacement

You’ll remove each front door trim panel, disconnect the window glass from the regulator, then unbolt and remove the regulator/motor assembly. Replacing both sides is basically the same job twice—do one door completely, then repeat on the other.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before unplugging door wiring.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass with tape or a helper to prevent it falling.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the regulator scissor/cable mechanism.
  • ⚠️ If equipped with side airbag in the front door, do not probe yellow connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm ratchet
  • 6-inch extension for 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Pick tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Painters tape (1.5-inch)
  • Torque wrench (5–30 Nm range)
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator with motor (driver side) - Qty: 1
  • Front window regulator with motor (passenger side) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips (front) - Qty: 6-12
  • Butyl door vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Kicks on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lower each front window to about halfway if it still moves (this helps access the glass-to-regulator bolts).
  • Disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket. Wait 3 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
  • Set aside a clean table or blanket for the door panel so it doesn’t get scratched.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a pick tool to pop off the small plastic covers hiding screws in the pull handle/armrest area.
  • Remove the door panel screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pry around the perimeter of the door panel and release the clips.
  • Lift the panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug the switch panel/door harness connectors by hand. Press the tab before pulling.
  • If your Kicks has a cable-style inside door handle, release it using needle-nose pliers if needed.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (water shield)

  • Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to separate sticky butyl without tearing the plastic.
  • Stick it to itself or hold it up with painters tape (1.5-inch).

Step 3: Support the window glass

  • If the glass is still attached, raise/lower by hand as needed to align the glass clamp bolts with the access holes.
  • Use painters tape (1.5-inch) across the top of the door frame to hold the glass up once it’s separated.
  • Apply at least 3 long strips from outside glass over the roofline to the inside. More tape is safer.

Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator

  • Through the door access holes, remove the glass-to-regulator fasteners using a 10mm socket with a 10mm ratchet and 6-inch extension.
  • Carefully slide the glass fully up by hand and secure it with painters tape (1.5-inch).

Step 5: Unplug and unbolt the regulator/motor assembly

  • Unplug the window motor connector by hand (use a pick tool to help press the tab if it’s stuck).
  • Remove the regulator/motor mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 10mm ratchet, and 6-inch extension.
  • Remove any guide rail bolts the same way.
  • Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the largest access opening in the door.

Step 6: Install the new regulator/motor

  • Insert the new regulator into the door cavity and align it to the mounting holes.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Tighten regulator/motor bolts using a torque wrench (5–30 Nm range): Torque to 8–10 Nm (71–89 in-lbs).
  • Plug in the motor connector by hand until it clicks.

Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps.
  • Install and tighten the glass clamp fasteners using a 10mm socket and 10mm ratchet: Torque to 8–10 Nm (71–89 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painters tape (1.5-inch) holding the glass.

Step 8: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door trim panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place. Add butyl door vapor barrier adhesive anywhere it won’t stick.
  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors by hand.
  • Hang the door panel on the top lip and press clips in around the edges using your hands.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and snap covers back in place.

Step 9: Repeat for the other front door

  • Repeat Steps 1–8 for the other side.
  • Do one door at a time.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Cycle each front window up/down several times to confirm smooth movement and no binding.
  • Listen for clicking/grinding; if heard, recheck regulator alignment and glass seating.
  • Re-initialize auto-up/auto-down (if equipped): with the door closed, hold the switch to fully lower, keep holding 2 seconds; then fully raise and keep holding 2 seconds.
  • Verify the door locks, mirror controls, and speaker work on both doors.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $700-$1,300 (parts + labor for both fronts)

DIY Cost: $180-$500 (parts only for both fronts)

You Save: $520-$800 by doing it yourself!
