šŸ”§ Oxygen Sensor - Replacement

On your Sierra, the oxygen sensor watches exhaust oxygen content so the engine computer can adjust fuel trim. A bad sensor can trigger check engine lights, poor fuel economy, rough running, or emissions test failure. This guide covers replacing one sensor at a time; the exact bank and sensor position matters.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • Let the exhaust cool completely before starting. Hot exhaust parts can cause serious burns.
  • Raise the truck securely on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will be near wiring damage or want to clear codes safely after the repair.
  • Be careful with the sensor wiring. Do not twist or pull on the harness.
  • Spray penetrating oil early.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Oxygen sensor socket 7/8-inch
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 3/8-inch drive extension set
  • Torque wrench
  • Penetrating oil
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip tool
  • OBD-II scan tool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Oxygen sensor - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Let the exhaust cool fully before touching anything underneath.
  • If the truck is raised, chock the rear wheels before lifting the front, or chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • Use your scan tool to confirm which oxygen sensor code is stored before replacing the part.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the failed sensor

  • Use your OBD-II scan tool to read the fault code and identify whether the issue is Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 2 Sensor 1, Bank 1 Sensor 2, or Bank 2 Sensor 2.
  • On the 5.3L V8, the upstream sensors are near the exhaust manifolds, and the downstream sensors are farther back in the exhaust.
  • Do not guess the location.

Step 2: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use the floor jack to raise the truck enough to reach the sensor safely.
  • Place jack stands under the frame and lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Double-check stability before getting underneath.

Step 3: Disconnect the sensor connector

  • Find the oxygen sensor harness and follow it to the connector.
  • Use the trim clip tool to release any retaining clips or harness holders.
  • Unplug the connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the halves apart.
  • Inspect the harness for melted insulation or exhaust contact.

Step 4: Loosen and remove the old sensor

  • Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak for a few minutes if needed.
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket 7/8-inch, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and extension set to break the sensor loose.
  • Turn counterclockwise to remove it.
  • If the sensor is stuck, work it gently back and forth instead of forcing it.

Step 5: Install the new sensor

  • Compare the new sensor to the old one to make sure the connector and wire length match.
  • Thread the sensor in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the oxygen sensor socket 7/8-inch to tighten it.
  • Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Route the harness the same way as the original so it stays away from the exhaust.

Step 6: Reconnect and secure the wiring

  • Plug the connector back in until it clicks.
  • Use the trim clip tool to reinstall any clips or retainers.
  • Make sure the wire is not touching hot exhaust parts or moving suspension parts.

Step 7: Lower the truck

  • Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck fully.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks or warning lights.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear the code.
  • Drive the truck through a normal warm-up cycle and recheck for pending codes.
  • If the code returns quickly, the wiring, fuse, or catalytic converter may also need inspection.
