š§ Highlander - Side View Mirror Replacement
On your Highlander, the āside view mirrorā can mean either the complete mirror assembly (housing + motor + glass) or just the mirror glass. The steps are different, so weāll confirm that first to avoid breaking clips or ordering the wrong part.

- ā ļø If youāll remove the door panel and unplug connectors, disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent accidental shorting.
- ā ļø Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking the sail panel (the small triangle trim by the mirror).

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm what youāre replacing
- Are you replacing the complete mirror assembly (housing) or just the mirror glass?
- Also confirm which side: driver or passenger.
- If you reply, Iāll tailor steps exactly.
Step 2: Remove the inner sail panel (triangle trim)
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry the sail panel straight outward from the top edge.
- If it has a small clip/cover, use a pick tool carefully to start an edge, then continue with the trim tool.
- Set the panel aside.
Step 3: If needed, remove the front door trim panel
- Remove the screw(s) in the interior pull handle/armrest area using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the door panel clips around the perimeter.
- Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Unplug electrical connectors by releasing tabs with a pick tool (do not pull on wires).
- Trim clips often breakāhaving spares helps.
Step 4: Peel back the water shield enough to reach the mirror connector
- Carefully peel the plastic water shield back by hand.
- If the adhesive stretches or wonāt re-stick, plan to use butyl tape during reassembly.
Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector
- Locate the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mounting area inside the door.
- Press the lock tab and pull the connector apart (use a pick tool if the tab is stubborn).
Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the mounting nuts.
- Use a magnetic pickup tool if a nut drops inside the door.
Step 7: Remove the mirror assembly
- Feed the wiring and grommet out through the hole and remove the mirror from the door.
- Inspect the mirror gasket; replace if torn or flattened (to prevent wind noise and water leaks).
Step 8: Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the wiring through the door and seat the mirror on the door.
- Hand-start all mounting nuts to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench (in-lb) and 10mm socket: Torque to 62 in-lb (7 NĀ·m).
Step 9: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door
- Reconnect the mirror connector until it clicks.
- Re-stick the water shield; add butyl tape if needed.
- Reconnect door electrical connectors.
- Hang the door panel on the top ledge, then press clips in place by hand.
- Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Reinstall the sail panel by lining up clips and pressing it straight in.
Step 10: If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal snugly.
ā After Repair
- Test mirror movement with the mirror switch (up/down/left/right).
- If equipped, verify heating works (rear defogger on) and any mirror turn signal works.
- Check for wind noise on a short drive; re-seat the mirror gasket if needed.
- Make sure the window operates normally and the door locks/unlocks.
