šŸ”§ Highlander - Side View Mirror Replacement

On your Highlander, the ā€œside view mirrorā€ can mean either the complete mirror assembly (housing + motor + glass) or just the mirror glass. The steps are different, so we’ll confirm that first to avoid breaking clips or ordering the wrong part.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-2.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on level ground and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø If you’ll remove the door panel and unplug connectors, disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent accidental shorting.
  • āš ļø Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking the sail panel (the small triangle trim by the mirror).
  • āš ļø Support the mirror as you remove the last nut so it doesn’t fall and chip paint.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" extension (1/4" drive)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Painter’s tape
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Shop light
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips - Qty: 5-10
  • Butyl tape (water shield adhesive) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Apply painter’s tape along the mirror base and door edge to protect paint.
  • If replacing the complete assembly: plan on removing the inner sail panel and usually the door panel to access the mirror connector.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm what you’re replacing

  • Are you replacing the complete mirror assembly (housing) or just the mirror glass?
  • Also confirm which side: driver or passenger.
  • If you reply, I’ll tailor steps exactly.

Step 2: Remove the inner sail panel (triangle trim)

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pry the sail panel straight outward from the top edge.
  • If it has a small clip/cover, use a pick tool carefully to start an edge, then continue with the trim tool.
  • Set the panel aside.

Step 3: If needed, remove the front door trim panel

  • Remove the screw(s) in the interior pull handle/armrest area using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop the door panel clips around the perimeter.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug electrical connectors by releasing tabs with a pick tool (do not pull on wires).
  • Trim clips often break—having spares helps.

Step 4: Peel back the water shield enough to reach the mirror connector

  • Carefully peel the plastic water shield back by hand.
  • If the adhesive stretches or won’t re-stick, plan to use butyl tape during reassembly.

Step 5: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the mirror mounting area inside the door.
  • Press the lock tab and pull the connector apart (use a pick tool if the tab is stubborn).

Step 6: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the mounting nuts.
  • Use a magnetic pickup tool if a nut drops inside the door.

Step 7: Remove the mirror assembly

  • Feed the wiring and grommet out through the hole and remove the mirror from the door.
  • Inspect the mirror gasket; replace if torn or flattened (to prevent wind noise and water leaks).

Step 8: Install the new mirror assembly

  • Feed the wiring through the door and seat the mirror on the door.
  • Hand-start all mounting nuts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench (in-lb) and 10mm socket: Torque to 62 in-lb (7 NĀ·m).

Step 9: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door

  • Reconnect the mirror connector until it clicks.
  • Re-stick the water shield; add butyl tape if needed.
  • Reconnect door electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the top ledge, then press clips in place by hand.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver #2.
  • Reinstall the sail panel by lining up clips and pressing it straight in.

Step 10: If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it

  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the negative terminal snugly.

āœ… After Repair

  • Test mirror movement with the mirror switch (up/down/left/right).
  • If equipped, verify heating works (rear defogger on) and any mirror turn signal works.
  • Check for wind noise on a short drive; re-seat the mirror gasket if needed.
  • Make sure the window operates normally and the door locks/unlocks.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $300-$900 (parts + labor, varies by options like BSM/heated)

DIY Cost: $120-$650 (parts only)

You Save: $180-$250+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.7-1.5 hours.
