🔧 Grand Cherokee - Side View Mirror Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, “side view mirror replacement” can mean either swapping just the mirror glass (the reflective piece) or replacing the whole mirror assembly (housing + motor + wiring). The steps and parts change depending on which one you’re doing and what features your mirror has (heated, power-fold, blind spot, camera).
Quick questions (so I give the exact right steps): Which side (driver or passenger), and are you replacing the mirror glass only or the entire mirror assembly?
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 0.5-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging mirror wiring.
- ⚠️ If your mirror has heat/BSM/camera, unplug connectors gently—don’t pull on the wires.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and safety glasses—mirror glass edges can be sharp if cracked.
- ⚠️ If you disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench and isolate the negative cable so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Choose your repair path
- If you’re swapping the reflective piece only, follow Path A.
- If you’re replacing the whole unit (housing/motor/wiring), follow Path B.
Path A (Mirror Glass Only):
Step 2A: Tilt the mirror to access the edge
- Use the mirror switch to tilt the glass all the way inward/down to create a gap at the outer/top edge.
- If the glass won’t move (motor failed), use work gloves and carefully press the glass by hand to create a small gap.
Step 3A: Release the mirror glass from the motor plate
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry at the gap.
- Work slowly around the glass until it pops free from the center mounting plate. Pry a little, move, pry again.
Step 4A: Disconnect mirror heater/feature connectors
- If equipped, unplug the heater spade terminals using needle-nose pliers (pull on the connector, not the wire).
- If equipped with additional wiring at the glass, release the lock using a pick tool and unplug.
Step 5A: Install the new mirror glass
- Reconnect the heater/feature connectors by hand.
- Align the new glass with the motor plate and press evenly with both hands until it snaps in.
- Cycle the mirror directions using the switch to confirm smooth movement.
Path B (Entire Mirror Assembly):
Step 2B: Remove the interior mirror sail panel
- At the top-front of the door (inside), locate the small triangular trim cover (“sail panel”).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop it off.
- If there’s a tweeter speaker behind it, unplug the connector using a pick tool to release the tab.
Step 3B: Remove the door panel fasteners
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the cover behind the interior door handle, then remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver (or Torx T20 driver if equipped).
- Remove the screw(s) in the armrest/pull-handle area using a Torx T30 driver.
Step 4B: Remove the door panel
- Use a panel clip pliers or plastic trim removal tool to pop the door panel clips free around the perimeter.
- Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Unplug the switch panel connectors by releasing the tabs with a pick tool.
- Disconnect the door-handle cable (it’s a cable with a ball-end) by rotating it out of its bracket by hand. Take a photo first.
Step 5B: Peel back the vapor barrier (water shield)
- Carefully peel the plastic barrier back near the mirror area.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to separate the sticky butyl adhesive without tearing the plastic.
Step 6B: Unplug the mirror harness
- Locate the mirror connector inside the door near the mirror mount.
- Release the lock using a pick tool and unplug the connector.
Step 7B: Remove the mirror mounting nuts
- Support the mirror from the outside with one hand.
- Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove the mounting nuts.
- Remove the mirror from the door.
Step 8B: Install the new mirror assembly
- Feed the mirror wiring through the opening and position the mirror on the door.
- Install the mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
- Plug in the mirror connector until it clicks.
Step 9B: Reseal the vapor barrier
- Press the vapor barrier back into the butyl adhesive all the way around.
- If it won’t stick well, apply butyl adhesive strip and press firmly by hand.
Step 10B: Reinstall the door panel
- Reconnect the door-handle cable by hand.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors (window/lock/memory, if equipped).
- Hook the panel on the window ledge, then press the clips in around the perimeter using your palms.
- Reinstall the screws using a Torx T30 driver and Torx T20 driver (or Phillips screwdriver, as equipped).
- Snap the sail panel back on, reconnecting the tweeter if equipped.
âś… After Repair
- Test mirror adjustment in all directions.
- If equipped, test mirror heat (may take a few minutes), power-fold, and memory positions.
- If equipped, confirm blind-spot indicator operation and that no warning lights appear.
- Check the door for wind noise: if you hear whistling, recheck the sail panel and vapor barrier seal.
