🔧 Durango - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side mirror on your Durango involves removing the small interior trim at the front top corner of the door, unplugging the mirror wiring, and unbolting the mirror from the door. This is usually needed after a cracked housing, broken glass, loose mirror, or damaged power-adjust function.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging door wiring.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an airbag/SRS light or electrical short.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand while removing the nuts so it doesn’t fall and scratch paint.
  • ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools to avoid breaking clips or marring panels.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 1/4" drive extension 3"
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Trim removal tool set (plastic)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Pick tool
  • Painters tape 1"
  • Shop towels
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • 10mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (Left/Driver or Right/Passenger, correct options) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel clips (as needed) - Qty: 1-6
  • Mirror gasket/seal (if not included with mirror) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the window on the side you’re working on (makes handling the door panel easier).
  • Apply painters tape along the mirror base area to protect the paint.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench and wait 2 minutes before unplugging connectors.
  • Trim tool = plastic pry tool to pop clips safely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior “sail panel” trim

  • At the front upper corner of the door (inside), locate the small triangular trim cover.
  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry the sail panel outward and release the clips.
  • If there’s a small tweeter speaker connector, unplug it using a pick tool to lift the lock tab (if equipped).

Step 2: Access the mirror fasteners and wiring

  • Behind the sail panel, locate the mirror electrical connector and mounting studs/nuts.
  • Unplug the mirror connector by pressing the release tab (help with a pick tool if needed).
  • Place a shop towel under the work area to catch any dropped nut.

Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror from the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 1/4" drive extension 3" to remove the mirror nuts (typically 3).
  • Carefully pull the mirror away from the door and feed the wiring through the opening.

Step 4: Prepare the new mirror

  • Compare the old and new mirror: connector shape, stud locations, and options.
  • If your old mirror has a foam gasket and the new mirror doesn’t include one, transfer the gasket.
  • Clean the mounting surface with a shop towel so the mirror sits flat and seals correctly.
  • Don’t reuse torn gaskets; wind noise happens.

Step 5: Install the new mirror

  • Feed the new mirror wiring through the door opening and position the mirror on the door.
  • Start all nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Final tighten using a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect wiring and reinstall the sail panel

  • Plug in the mirror connector until it clicks.
  • If equipped, reconnect the tweeter connector.
  • Align the sail panel clips and press it back into place by hand.

Step 7: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Snug the terminal securely (do not over-tighten).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment (up/down/left/right).
  • If equipped, test mirror heat and turn signal in the mirror.
  • Close the door and check for wind noise on a short drive.
  • Re-check mirror stability: it should not wobble at the base.
  • If an airbag/SRS light appears, a connector may be loose and needs re-checking.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$650 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $80-$350 (parts only)

You Save: $170-$300+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0-1.5 hours.
