🔧 Equinox - Side View Mirror Replacement

Replacing the side mirror usually means removing the interior door trim, unplugging the mirror wiring, and swapping the mirror assembly on the door. On your Equinox, the mirror is held in with three nuts behind the interior “sail panel” and door panel.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours (per side)

Quick questions (so I can tailor it perfectly): Which side are you replacing (driver or passenger)? Does your mirror have heat and/or a turn-signal lamp on the mirror?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before door panel removal; the door may contain a side airbag.
  • ⚠️ Support the mirror with one hand when removing the last nut so it doesn’t fall and scratch paint.
  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface with the ignition OFF and key removed.
  • ⚠️ Use plastic trim tools to avoid cracking trim or scratching paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Panel clip pliers
  • Ratchet
  • 3-inch extension
  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Painter’s tape
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side) - Qty: 1
  • Door trim panel push-clips - Qty: 1-5 (as needed)
  • Mirror foam gasket/seal - Qty: 1 (if not included with mirror)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and lower the window on the side you’re working on.
  • 🧰 A “sail panel” is the small triangular trim piece at the front top corner of the door (inside), near the mirror.
  • 🔌 Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait 2 minutes before touching door wiring.
  • 🧼 Put painter’s tape on the door skin near the mirror to protect paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior sail panel

  • Use a trim removal tool to gently pry off the sail panel at the top-front of the door.
  • If it has a small clip, pull straight out to avoid breaking it.

Step 2: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a small flat screwdriver to pop off the small covers hiding screws (typically near the door pull handle and/or latch area).
  • Remove door panel screws using a 7mm socket and a Torx T20 screwdriver as equipped.
  • Use a trim removal tool along the bottom and sides to pop the panel clips free.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.

Step 3: Disconnect door panel electrical connectors

  • Support the panel and unplug connectors (window/lock switch, courtesy light) by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector out by hand.
  • Don’t pull on wires—pull on connectors.

Step 4: Unplug the mirror connector

  • Locate the mirror wiring connector near the top-front of the door (behind where the sail panel was).
  • Press the lock tab with a small flat screwdriver (if needed) and unplug it.
  • If your mirror has heat/turn-signal, you may see extra pins or an additional connector—disconnect them the same way.

Step 5: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Hold the mirror on the outside with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 3-inch extension to remove the three mirror nuts.
  • Remove the mirror and pull the wiring through the hole.

Step 6: Install the new mirror

  • Guide the mirror wiring through the door opening and seat the mirror against the door.
  • Start all three nuts by hand (to avoid cross-threading).
  • Tighten with a 10mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench (in-lb): Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm).
  • Make sure the foam gasket sits flat.

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reassemble the door

  • Plug the mirror connector(s) back in firmly by hand until they click.
  • Reconnect all door panel connectors by hand.
  • Hang the door panel on the top window ledge, then press clips in around the perimeter.
  • Reinstall screws with a 7mm socket / Torx T20 screwdriver (match what came out).
  • Reinstall the sail panel by pressing it straight into place.

Step 8: Reconnect battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔍 Turn ignition ON and test mirror adjustment in all directions.
  • 🔍 If equipped, confirm mirror heat (rear defrost button) and turn-signal lamp operation.
  • 🔍 Drive at 40–60 km/h and listen for wind noise; if present, re-check mirror seating and gasket.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹4,000–₹12,000 (parts + labor, depending on mirror features)

DIY Cost: ₹2,500–₹9,500 (parts only)

You Save: ₹1,500–₹4,000 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800–₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.0–1.5 hours.
