šŸ”§ Tacoma - Side View Mirror Replacement

You’ll remove the small interior trim cover at the front top corner of the door (the ā€œsail panelā€), unplug the mirror (if equipped), remove the mounting nuts, then install and torque the new mirror. This is a straightforward bolt-on job, but it’s easy to break trim clips if you rush.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours (one side)

Two quick questions (optional): 1) Driver side, passenger side, or both? 2) Are your mirrors power-adjust (has a mirror control switch) or manual (adjust by hand)?

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on level ground and keep fingers clear of sharp door metal edges.
  • āš ļø If your mirror is power-equipped, turn the key OFF before unplugging connectors.
  • āš ļø If you disconnect the battery, you may lose radio presets.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Inch-pound torque wrench (0–200 in-lb range)
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Painters tape
  • Shop towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Side view mirror assembly (correct side, painted or black as equipped) - Qty: 1 (or 2 if doing both)
  • Mirror sail panel clips (optional, if any break) - Qty: 1-3
  • Door trim fasteners (optional, if any break) - Qty: 1-5

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧰 Lower the window on the side you’re working on (gives you a safer handhold).
  • 🧰 Put the key to OFF and remove it.
  • 🧰 Apply painters tape along the door edge near the mirror to protect the paint.
  • 🧰 If your mirror is power and you prefer extra safety, disconnect the battery negative terminal (requires a 10mm tool), but it’s not strictly required if the key stays OFF.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the interior mirror trim (ā€œsail panelā€)

  • Use the trim panel removal tool to gently pry the triangular trim piece at the top-front of the door (inside), next to the mirror.
  • Work from the top edge and pop it free a little at a time. Slow prying prevents broken clips.
  • If there is a small screw on your sail panel (varies by equipment), remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 2: Disconnect the mirror wiring (power mirrors only)

  • If you see an electrical connector, press the lock tab and unplug it by hand.
  • If the connector is tight, use the trim panel removal tool to gently assist—do not pull on the wires.
  • A ā€œconnector lock tabā€ is the little clip that holds it together.

Step 3: Remove the mirror mounting nuts

  • Support the mirror from the outside with one hand (or have a helper hold it) so it doesn’t fall.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the mounting nuts (typically 3 nuts).
  • Keep a magnetic pickup tool ready in case a nut drops inside the door.

Step 4: Remove the old mirror

  • From outside the door, pull the mirror straight away from the door.
  • For power mirrors, feed the wiring and connector through the opening as you remove it.
  • Wipe the mounting surface with a shop towel so the new mirror sits flush.

Step 5: Install the new mirror

  • Position the new mirror on the door and align the studs with the holes.
  • For power mirrors, feed the connector/wiring through the opening before seating the mirror.
  • Thread the nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.

Step 6: Torque the mirror mounting nuts

  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench with a 10mm socket to tighten the nuts evenly.
  • Torque to 65 in-lb (7.4 NĀ·m).
  • Tighten in a small ā€œroundā€ pattern (not all the way on one nut at a time) so the mirror seats evenly.

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reinstall the sail panel

  • Reconnect the mirror electrical connector (power mirrors only) until it clicks.
  • Line up the sail panel clips, then press it back into place by hand.
  • If equipped, reinstall the screw using a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only).

āœ… After Repair

  • āœ… Power mirrors: turn the key ON and test mirror movement in all directions.
  • āœ… Check mirror glass for vibration on a short drive and re-check nut tightness if needed.
  • āœ… Make sure the sail panel sits flush with no gaps or rattles.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $150-$450 (parts + labor, per side)

DIY Cost: $40-$250 (parts only, per side)

You Save: $110-$200+ by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
