🔧 Edge - Rear Window Regulator Replacement
Replacing a rear window regulator on your Edge involves removing the rear door trim panel, securing the glass, unbolting the regulator assembly, and reinstalling everything in the correct order. The exact steps and bolt torque specs can vary depending on whether you’re replacing the regulator only or the regulator-with-motor assembly and which rear door (left vs right).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the glass and scissor/cable mechanism while powered.
- ⚠️ Support the window glass before loosening the glass clamp fasteners to prevent it from dropping.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before unplugging door electrical connectors if you’ll be working around side-impact airbag wiring in the door.
- ⚠️ Use painter’s tape to secure the glass to the door frame; do not rely on friction.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear window regulator (LH or RH) - Qty: 1
- Rear window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included)
- Rear door trim panel clips - Qty: 4-10 (as needed)
- Butyl tape (weather shield adhesive) - Qty: 1 (as needed)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and open the rear door you’re working on fully.
- If the window still moves, run it to about halfway down (this usually gives access to the glass clamps through the door openings).
- If you’ll disconnect the battery: turn ignition OFF, wait 2 minutes, then use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Have painter’s tape ready to secure the glass to the door frame once it’s separated from the regulator.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Before I lock in the exact factory torque specs and connector locations, answer these 2 quick questions:
- Are we replacing the left rear regulator or the right rear regulator?
- Did you buy a regulator only (reusing the motor) or a regulator with motor?
Step 1: Remove the rear door switch/handle trim
- Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry up the window switch bezel.
- Use a pick tool to lift any small access covers hiding screws (if equipped).
- Unplug the window switch connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out.
Step 2: Remove rear door trim panel
- Remove the visible door panel screws using Torx T20 bit, Torx T25 bit, or 8mm socket (fastener type can vary by location).
- Use a trim removal tool set to pop the panel clips loose around the edges.
- Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the window channel.
- Unplug remaining electrical connectors and set the panel aside.
Step 3: Remove and reseal the water shield (vapor barrier)
- Carefully peel the water shield back using your hands and a trim removal tool set.
- Don’t tear it; it prevents water leaks.
- If the adhesive won’t stick later, plan to use butyl tape during reassembly.
Step 4: Separate the window glass from the regulator
- If possible, reconnect the switch temporarily and use it to align the glass clamp bolts with the access holes, then unplug the switch again.
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the glass clamp fasteners (do not remove them all the way unless required by your regulator design).
- Push the glass fully up by hand and secure it to the door frame using painter’s tape (1.5") over the top edge of the door.
Step 5: Unplug the regulator motor (if equipped) and unbolt the regulator
- Unplug the regulator motor connector (press tab, pull straight out).
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove regulator mounting bolts.
- Guide the regulator assembly out through the service opening in the door.
Step 6: Transfer motor (if regulator-only) and install the new regulator
- If reusing the motor: remove motor screws with the correct Torx bit (varies by supplier), then install it onto the new regulator.
- Position the new regulator into the door and start all bolts by hand.
- Use a torque wrench (5–30 Nm range) to torque fasteners after you confirm the 2 questions above.
Step 7: Reattach glass to regulator and function check
- Remove some tape so the glass can move slightly, but keep one strip as a safety catch.
- Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps.
- Tighten the glass clamp fasteners with a 10mm socket, then torque after you confirm the 2 questions above.
- Reconnect the switch and cycle the window up/down while watching for binding or crooked movement.
Step 8: Reinstall water shield and door trim panel
- Press the water shield back into place; use butyl tape where needed.
- Reconnect all electrical connectors.
- Hang the door panel on the top channel, then press clips in around the perimeter.
- Reinstall screws using the correct Torx bit or 8mm socket.
âś… After Repair
- Verify the window moves smoothly and seals evenly at the top.
- If you disconnected the battery, reset the clock and any saved settings.
- If the window has one-touch/auto-up behavior and it doesn’t work correctly, tell me and I’ll walk you through the Edge-specific window relearn procedure.
- Check for water leaks after the next car wash/rain (water shield must be sealed).
