🔧 Timing Drive - Replacement Clarification

Your S60 does not use a timing belt. It uses a timing chain, which is a different setup and is not a normal maintenance replacement item. If you’re hearing chain rattle, seeing cam/crank correlation codes, or have oil-related timing issues, the repair process is much more involved than a belt job.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 6-12 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the battery before working near the starter, alternator, or engine harness.
  • Support the engine properly if mounts must be removed.
  • Work only on a fully cool engine.
  • Use caution with sealed engine timing components; incorrect setup can cause engine damage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set
  • Metric wrench set

  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting.
  • Have a timing tool set ready before disassembly.
  • Plan on replacing oil and filter during reassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Prepare the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack and jack stands to raise and safely support the vehicle if needed for access.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
  • Keep fasteners organized.

Step 2: Remove access components

  • Use the correct metric socket set and trim removal tool set to remove the engine covers, intake parts, and any brackets blocking the timing cover.
  • Drain the coolant into a drain pan if the front cover removal requires it.

Step 3: Set engine to timing position

  • Use a breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt to rotate the engine by hand only.
  • Align the crankshaft and camshaft marks exactly as required by the timing tool set.
  • Torque to factory specification during reassembly.
  • Never force the engine.

Step 4: Remove timing cover and chain components

  • Use the metric socket set to remove the front timing cover bolts.
  • Remove the chain tensioner, guides, and chain in the correct order.
  • Inspect all sprockets and sealing surfaces for wear or damage.

Step 5: Install new timing components

  • Install the new chain, guides, and tensioner using the timing tool set.
  • Apply front cover sealant where required by the factory pattern.
  • Reinstall the cover and torque fasteners to factory specification.

Step 6: Reassemble and verify timing

  • Reinstall all removed components using the metric socket set and torque wrench.
  • Rotate the engine by hand two full turns and recheck timing marks.
  • Refill coolant and engine oil.

Step 7: Start-up check

  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and listen for abnormal noise.
  • Use a scan tool to clear codes and confirm no cam/crank faults return.

✅ After Repair

  • Check for oil, coolant, and vacuum leaks.
  • Verify smooth idle and normal acceleration.
  • Rescan for engine codes after the test drive.
