Your Outback does not use a timing belt on the 2.5L engine. It uses a timing chain, which is internal and not a routine maintenance item. If you're hearing chain noise, have a leak, or suspect timing issues, the repair is much more involved than a belt change.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Drain engine oil and coolant before opening the front cover.
  • Label connectors and bolts as you remove them.
  • Take photos as you go.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove access components

  • Use the metric socket set to remove the intake ducting, drive belt, accessory brackets, and any covers blocking the front timing cover.
  • Use the breaker bar to loosen stubborn pulley bolts if needed.

Step 2: Set engine timing reference

  • Rotate the engine by hand with the metric socket set on the crankshaft bolt until the timing marks line up at top dead center.
  • Do not use the starter motor.

Step 3: Remove front engine cover

  • Use the metric socket set to remove the front timing cover bolts.
  • Carefully break the seal and remove the cover without damaging the mating surfaces.

Step 4: Remove timing components

  • Use the cam/crank holding tools (specialty) to keep the sprockets from moving.
  • Remove the chain tensioner, guides, and timing chains with the metric socket set.
  • Keep all parts in order.

Step 5: Install new timing parts

  • Install the new guides, chains, and tensioner using the metric socket set.
  • Align all colored chain marks with the cam and crank timing marks exactly.
  • Torque fasteners to manufacturer specification for each component.

Step 6: Reassemble front cover

  • Clean all sealing surfaces thoroughly.
  • Apply fresh sealant to the front cover and install it with the metric socket set.
  • Torque cover bolts to manufacturer specification.

Step 7: Reinstall accessories and refill fluids

  • Reinstall removed brackets, pulleys, drive belt, and intake parts with the metric socket set.
  • Refill engine oil and coolant.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.

✅ After Repair

  • Crank the engine and listen for abnormal noise.
  • Check for oil or coolant leaks at the front cover.
  • Verify smooth idle and no check engine light.
  • Scan for codes if the light stays on.
