1500 Classic - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change ⚙️

Before we start: your 2022 1500 Classic 3.6L 4WD uses a sealed 8-speed automatic (ZF 8HP). Ram does not list a normal drain-and-fill; the OEM method is a pan/filter replacement with a scan-tool–controlled fluid level set at a specific temperature.

Because you’re a beginner, I’ll lay it out clearly so you can decide if you want to DIY or use a shop.

Quick Questions ❓

Answer these so I can give the exact procedure:

  • 🔧 Is your gear selector a rotary dial on the dash (most 8-speed trucks)?
  • 🧰 Do you have access to a scan tool that can read transmission fluid temperature (not just engine codes)?

I’ll assume 8-speed 8HP and that you can at least borrow a scan tool. If that’s wrong, tell me and I’ll adjust.

Important Safety & Reality Check ⚠️

  • ⚠️ Vehicle must be safely lifted level (all four corners). A level truck is critical for correct fluid level.
  • ⚠️ Hot fluid can burn you. Fluid will be around 30–50°C (86–122°F) during level setting.
  • ⚠️ Incorrect fluid level can cause harsh shifts or transmission damage.
  • ⚠️ This job is medium–advanced for a first-timer because of the temperature-based level check.

If any of this feels too much, I can help you find a shop and tell you what to ask for.

Parts You’ll Need 📦

  • 🛢️ ATF: ZF 8HP–spec fluid (e.g. Mopar 8&9 Speed ATF or ZF Lifeguard 8)
    • Capacity for a pan drop is usually about 4–5 liters (4–5 qt).
  • 🧩 Transmission pan with integrated filter (the filter is built into the plastic pan on these units).
  • 🧵 New pan bolts (if your kit includes them; many are one-time-use).
  • 🧽 Brake cleaner (for cleaning the mating surface).
  • 🧴 Shop rags or paper towels.

Tools You’ll Need 🧰

  • 🔧 Socket set (metric):
    • Common sizes: 8mm, 10mm, 13mm for pan bolts (exact size may vary slightly; we’ll confirm once you’re under there).
  • 🔩 Torque wrench (a tool that lets you tighten bolts to a specific force):
    • Range: about 5–30 Nm (50–265 in-lb).
  • 🧊 Hex/Allen or Torx bits for the fill and drain plugs (often 8mm hex or Torx; we’ll verify when you see them).
  • 🧯 Fluid transfer pump (hand pump that screws onto the ATF bottle to push fluid up into the transmission).
  • 🧱 Floor jack and jack stands or ramps:
    • Truck must be level, not just front raised.
  • 📏 OBD2 scan tool that can read transmission fluid temperature (TFT).
  • 🪛 Plastic scraper (to clean gasket surface without scratching).
  • 🧤 Nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • 🪣 Drain pan big enough for at least 8–10 liters.

Torque Specs (Typical ZF 8HP in your truck) 📏

  • 🔧 Pan bolts: about 8 Nm (71 in-lb) – snug, not tight. (I’ll remind you when we get there.)
  • 🔧 Drain plug: about 8–10 Nm (71–89 in-lb).
  • 🔧 Fill plug: about 30–35 Nm (22–26 ft-lb).

Exact values can vary slightly by transmission variant; stay in this range and do not overtighten.

Step 1 – Prepare the Truck 🧱

  • 🛑 Park on a flat surface, set the parking brake, and chock (block) the wheels.
  • ⬆️ Raise the truck and support it on four jack stands so it sits level.
  • 🧊 Let the transmission cool to around room temperature if you just drove it.

Step 2 – Locate Fill & Drain Plugs 🔍

  • 🔎 The transmission pan is the black plastic pan under the truck, roughly under the shifter area.
  • 🔘 The drain plug is on the bottom of the pan.
  • 🔘 The fill plug is on the side of the transmission case (usually passenger side, above the pan edge).
  • ⚠️ Always crack the fill plug loose first:
    • You don’t want to drain it and then discover you can’t refill it.

Step 3 – Open the Fill Plug First 🧴

  • 🧰 Use the correct hex/Torx bit and a ratchet to loosen the fill plug (do not remove it fully yet).
  • 👂 If it’s extremely tight, stop and we’ll talk options; you don’t want to strip it.

Step 4 – Drain the Old Fluid 🪣

  • 🪣 Place your drain pan under the drain plug.
  • 🔧 Carefully remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain completely.
  • 🧤 Fluid will be dark; that’s normal. Avoid splashing.
  • ⏱️ Let it drip until it’s down to a slow drip (5–10 minutes).

Step 5 – Remove the Transmission Pan 🧩

  • 🔧 Remove the pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern (opposite corners) so it comes down evenly.
  • 🪣 Keep the drain pan under it; more fluid will come out as the pan drops.
  • 🤲 Support the pan with one hand as you remove the last few bolts.
  • 🧽 Once off, pour remaining fluid into the drain pan.

Step 6 – Clean the Mating Surface 🧼

  • 🧽 Use a plastic scraper to gently clean the transmission case where the pan seals.
  • 🧴 Spray a little brake cleaner on a rag and wipe the surface until it’s clean and dry.
  • ⚠️ Do not gouge or scratch the aluminum surface.

Step 7 – Install New Pan & Filter 🆕

  • 🧩 Your new pan has the filter built in. Make sure the old filter seal came off with the old pan (if separate).
  • 🤲 Hold the new pan in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • 🔧 Snug the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to seat the pan evenly.
  • 🔩 Use your torque wrench to tighten each bolt to about 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
    • This is just “firm with a small ratchet,” not hard.
  • 🔧 Reinstall the drain plug with a new seal if provided, torque to about 8–10 Nm.

Step 8 – Initial Fill (Engine Off) 🛢️

  • 🧴 With the truck still level, remove the fill plug fully.
  • 🧯 Use your fluid transfer pump to pump ATF into the fill hole.
  • 🪣 Keep filling until fluid starts to run out of the fill hole in a steady stream.
  • 🔘 Reinstall the fill plug loosely (just to stop dripping) for now.

Step 9 – Warm Up & Cycle Gears 🔁

  • 🔑 Start the engine with the truck still on stands and level.
  • 🧊 Connect your scan tool and monitor transmission fluid temperature (TFT).
  • 🔁 With your foot on the brake, slowly move the shifter:
    • P → R → N → D → manual +/- if equipped → back to P
    • Pause 2–3 seconds in each position.
  • ⏱️ Do this 2–3 times to fill all the internal passages.

Step 10 – Final Level Set at Temperature 🌡️

  • 🌡️ Watch TFT on the scan tool. You want about 30–40°C (86–104°F) for level check (Ram/ZF spec is usually in this range).
  • 🔘 With engine running, foot on brake, shifter in P, remove the fill plug again.
  • 🧴 Pump in more ATF until it starts to dribble out as a thin stream.
  • 🕒 When it becomes a slow drip, the level is set.
  • 🔧 Reinstall the fill plug and torque to about 30–35 Nm (22–26 ft-lb).
  • ⚠️ Do not shut the engine off while the fill plug is out; level is checked with engine running.

Step 11 – Clean Up & Test Drive 🚗

  • 🧽 Wipe any spilled fluid from the pan and surrounding area.
  • ⬇️ Lower the truck safely to the ground.
  • 🚗 Take a short, gentle drive:
    • Listen for odd noises.
    • Feel for smooth shifts.
  • 🔍 Recheck under the truck for leaks after the drive.

When This Job Is Better for a Shop 🏥

  • 🧊 If you don’t have a scan tool that reads transmission temperature.
  • 🧱 If you can’t safely get the truck level on stands.
  • 🧰 If fill/drain plugs are corroded or extremely tight.

If you want, I can next: (1) help you find a local shop and give you a script of what to ask for, or (2) simplify this into a printable checklist you can take under the truck.
