How to Change Transmission Fluid on a 2018 Toyota Sienna (Sealed ATF WS Drain & Fill)
Step-by-step drain-and-fill procedure with tools, parts, safety tips, and ATF temperature level-check guidance

🔧 Sienna - Transmission Fluid Drain & Fill
Your Sienna’s automatic transmission uses a “sealed” fluid level setup (no dipstick). A correct service is a drain-and-fill plus a level check at a specific fluid temperature, or the fluid can end up too low or too high.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on a level surface; the fluid level check is not accurate on a slope.
- 🛑 Use jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- 🛑 Transmission fluid can be hot; wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- 🛑 Keep the engine running only when instructed; keep hands/loose clothing away from moving parts.
- 🛑 No battery disconnect is required for a fluid drain-and-fill.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
- Trim clip removal tool
- Metric socket set (8mm-14mm)
- 3/8" ratchet
- Torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
- Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
- OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature (specialty)
- Shop towels
- Brake cleaner spray
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (Toyota ATF WS) - Qty: 6 quarts
- Transmission drain plug gasket (crush washer) - Qty: 1
- Transmission fill plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- ✅ Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
- ✅ Raise the front and support with jack stands; keep the van level (front-to-rear) for the level check.
- ✅ Remove the front underbody cover(s) if they block access (use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket as needed).
- ✅ Plan how you’ll read transmission fluid temperature: use an OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature. (ATF temp is the fluid temperature inside the transmission.)
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm your fill & level-check setup (quick check)
- Use a flashlight and visually locate the fill plug and the drain plug area.
- On sealed Toyota units, the fluid level is often set using an internal overflow/standpipe through the drain opening, but the exact plug layout can vary by transmission build.
- Before you drain anything: confirm you can remove the fill plug first (so you don’t end up with an empty transmission you can’t refill).
Step 2: Remove the fill plug FIRST (do not drain yet)
- Place the drain pan under the transmission area (some fluid may seep).
- Use the correct tool for your plug style (typically a socket or hex bit socket set, depending on what you see) and loosen/remove the fill plug.
- If the fill plug is stuck, stop and address that first (penetrating oil, correct bit fully seated, controlled force). Do not proceed to draining until this plug can be removed.
Step 3: Drain the old fluid
- Position the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the drain plug.
- Use the correct socket to remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain completely.
- Clean the drain plug and magnet (if equipped) using brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
- Install a new drain plug gasket (crush washer).
Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug (snug, then torque)
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first (to avoid cross-threading).
- Use a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range) to torque the drain plug to the correct spec for your transmission.
- Tip: I can give exact torque with a plug photo.
Step 5: Refill with Toyota ATF WS
- Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill hole.
- Pump in automatic transmission fluid (Toyota ATF WS) until fluid begins to reach the level-check point for your setup.
- Reinstall the fill plug loosely for now (you’ll finalize after level check).
Step 6: Set the fluid level at the correct ATF temperature
- Connect your OBD2 scan tool that reads ATF temperature (specialty) and display transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine and keep the vehicle level on jack stands.
- With your foot on the brake, slowly move the shifter through each gear (P-R-N-D) and back to P, pausing ~2 seconds in each position.
- Follow the sealed-level procedure for your transmission design (overflow/standpipe style). This step is transmission-specific and depends on the exact plug/standpipe arrangement.
- Tip: Wrong temp = wrong level.
Step 7: Final tighten, clean up, and reinstall undercovers
- Torque the fill plug with a torque wrench (10-100 Nm range) to the correct spec for your transmission.
- Clean any residue using brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
- Reinstall underbody panels using the trim clip removal tool and metric socket set (8mm-14mm).
✅ After Repair
- 🔎 Test drive 10-15 minutes and verify smooth shifting.
- 🔎 Recheck for leaks around the drain and fill plugs after the drive.
- 🔎 If you have any delayed engagement, flares, or new noises, stop driving and re-check level/temperature method.

Two quick questions so I can give you the exact plug locations + torque specs for your Sienna:
- 📷 Can you upload a clear photo from under the van showing the transmission drain/fill plug area?
- Do you have an OBD2 tool/app that can read transmission fluid temperature?
