How to Change Transmission Fluid on a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 (6-Speed or 8-Speed)
Step-by-step drain, filter & pan gasket service with correct fluid type, tools list, and TFT level-check tips

š§ Sierra 1500 - Transmission Fluid Change
Your Sierraās transmission fluid service depends on which transmission you have (6-speed vs 8-speed). The fill method, fluid type, and ālevel checkā procedure are different, so we need to confirm that first to avoid using the wrong fluid or setting the level incorrectly.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on level ground and support the truck with jack stands before going underneath.
- ā ļø Transmission fluid can be very hot; let the truck cool and wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ā ļø Keep the engine OFF unless the level-check step specifically requires it (some GM procedures do).
- ā ļø Do not overfill; GM units are sensitive to fluid level and temperature.
š§ Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

- Socket set (metric)
- Torque wrench (inch-pound and/or ft-lb)
- Trim clip tool
- Shop towels
- Brake cleaner spray
- Hand pump fluid transfer pump (specialty)
- Scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature TFT (specialty)

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

š Before You Begin
- š æļø Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Lift and support the truck so it sits level front-to-rear (important for correct fluid level).
- Have a scan tool ready to read Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) (this is the temperature the transmission uses for proper level checking).
- Quick question (reply with one): Is your Sierra a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic?
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which transmission you have
- Open the glove box and look for the GM Service Parts Identification label (a white sticker with many 3-character codes).
- If you see M5U, thatās typically the 6-speed. If you see M5T, thatās typically the 8-speed.
- If the label is missing, tell me what the dash/cluster shows for gears while driving (does it have 6 or 8 forward gears).
- Reply ā6-speedā or ā8-speedā and Iāll give the exact fluid type, plug locations, temperature window, and torque specs for your Sierra.
Step 2: Do not drain fluid yet
- Wait to drain until we confirm 6-speed vs 8-speed, because the correct fluid and level-check procedure are different.
- Use shop towels and brake cleaner spray to wipe the pan area clean so you can easily identify drain/check plugs once confirmed.
ā After Repair
- Verify there are no leaks around the pan and plugs after the final level check.
- Confirm smooth shifting on a short test drive, then recheck for leaks.
