🔧 Mustang - Transmission Fluid Change

On your Mustang’s automatic transmission, the fluid level is checked through a fill/level plug (not a dipstick). The key is keeping the car level and checking fluid level at the correct transmission temperature so you don’t underfill or overfill.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5–3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface; keep the car perfectly level on stands.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be hot—wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ The level check is done with the engine running—keep hands/clothes away from the driveshaft, exhaust, and moving parts.
  • ⚠️ Support with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Shop rags
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Torx T30 bit socket
  • Hex bit socket set (5mm–10mm)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (foot-pound)
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool with transmission fluid temperature (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (MERCON ULV) - Qty: 6–7 quarts (drain & refill) or 10–13 quarts (pan drop service)
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission filter - Qty: 1
  • Drain plug seal (if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Fill/level plug seal (if equipped) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front and rear so the car sits level on jack stands.
  • Have your OBD2 scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature (TFT). TFT = the fluid temperature inside the transmission.
  • Plan for cleanup: lay rags under the transmission area and keep the drain pan ready.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm transmission type (quick visual)

  • Use safety glasses and slide under the car.
  • Look at the transmission pan shape and plug layout:
    • Most 2018 GT automatics are the 10-speed (10R80) and use MERCON ULV.
  • If you’re not sure, continue using the procedure below—just make sure the fluid you bought is MERCON ULV for your Mustang.

Step 2: Warm the transmission slightly

  • Start the engine and let it idle 3–5 minutes.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through P-R-N-D and back to P, pausing 2 seconds in each position.
  • Shut the engine off.

Step 3: Remove any undertray/splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the fasteners.
  • Set the panel and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Position your drain pan under the transmission pan.
  • Use the correct hex bit socket (commonly 8mm) with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the drain plug (if equipped).
  • Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 5 (Optional but recommended): Drop the pan and replace the filter

  • Support the pan with one hand and use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the pan bolts.
  • Lower the pan carefully into the drain pan.
  • Remove the filter using a Torx T30 bit socket (if retained with screws) or pull it straight down if it’s press-fit. “Press-fit” means it seals with an O-ring.
  • Install the new filter (lightly oil the new O-ring with fresh fluid).
  • Clean the pan, magnet(s), and sealing surfaces using shop rags.
  • Install a new pan gasket (if separate) and reinstall the pan.
  • Tighten pan bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern and Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 6: Refill through the fill plug

  • Locate the transmission fill/level plug on the transmission case/pan area.
  • Use the correct hex bit socket with a 3/8" ratchet to remove the fill plug.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump in MERCON ULV fluid.
  • Add about:
    • 5–6 quarts for a simple drain & refill
    • 7–9 quarts if you dropped the pan and changed the filter
  • Reinstall the fill plug snug for now (you’ll re-check level next).

Step 7: Set the fluid level at the correct temperature

  • Connect your OBD2 scan tool (specialty) and monitor transmission fluid temperature (TFT).
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter through P-R-N-D and back to P again.
  • When TFT reaches 35–45°C (95–113°F), remove the fill/level plug using the correct hex bit socket.
  • Correct level looks like a thin steady stream that becomes a drip:
    • If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump to add fluid until it starts to run out.
    • If a heavy stream pours out, let it drain until it becomes a drip.
  • Reinstall the fill/level plug and Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reinstall undertray and lower the car

  • Reinstall the undertray using the 10mm socket.
  • Lower the car safely using the floor jack and remove jack stands.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive 10–15 minutes, then recheck for leaks under the transmission.
  • If you feel slipping, flare (RPM jumps), or harsh shifts, stop and recheck the fluid level procedure at the correct TFT.
  • Dispose of used ATF properly (most auto parts stores accept it).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250–$550 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $70–$220 (parts only)
