🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Refill

Your Camry uses a sealed-style automatic transmission with Toyota WS fluid. The safe DIY service is a drain and refill, not a power flush. This helps refresh the fluid while keeping the transmission fill level correct.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the vehicle level. Fluid level changes if the car is tilted.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before draining.
  • Use only Toyota WS fluid.
  • Do not overfill. The final level must be checked at the correct fluid temperature.
  • A scan tool or fluid temperature readout is strongly recommended for accurate fill level.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Drain pan
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Funnel
  • Scan tool with transmission fluid temperature display

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (Toyota WS) - Qty: 4-5 quarts for a drain and refill
  • Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission overflow/fill plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise and support the vehicle securely on jack stands.
  • Have the new fluid ready before opening the drain plug.
  • Menu > Vehicle > Transmission Fluid Temp if your scan tool uses a live data menu.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the transmission slightly

  • Drive the vehicle for 10-15 minutes so the fluid flows easily.
  • Do not make it fully hot. Warm is enough.
  • Warm fluid drains faster.

Step 2: Raise and level the vehicle

  • Use the floor jack and support the Camry with jack stands.
  • Keep the vehicle as level as possible front to rear and side to side.

Step 3: Remove the under cover

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the cover and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Drain the old fluid

  • Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use a 24mm socket to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket.
  • Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with new WS fluid

  • Remove the fill/overflow plug using the 24mm socket.
  • Use the fluid transfer pump to add Toyota WS fluid through the fill hole.
  • Add fluid until it just begins to dribble out of the fill opening.
  • Install a new fill plug gasket.
  • Snug the fill plug for now. Final level check comes next.

Step 6: Set the final fluid level

  • Start the engine and keep it idling.
  • Move the shifter slowly through each gear position, then back to Park.
  • Use the scan tool to watch transmission fluid temperature.
  • At the correct level check range, remove the fill/overflow plug again with the 24mm socket.
  • If fluid dribbles out, the level is correct.
  • If no fluid comes out, add WS fluid with the fluid transfer pump until it just drips out.
  • Reinstall the plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
  • Level checks must be done carefully.

Step 7: Reinstall the under cover

  • Use the 10mm socket to reinstall the splash shield.
  • Make sure all clips and bolts are secure.

✅ After Repair

  • Lower the vehicle and test drive gently.
  • Check for leaks at both plugs.
  • Recheck fluid level if you notice shifting problems or leaks.
  • No battery reset or adaptation procedure is normally required for this service.
