🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill

This procedure replaces the Toyota hybrid transaxle fluid on your Prius V. It is a drain-and-fill service, not a flush, and the fluid level is set through the fill/check port. This is a good maintenance item to help keep the hybrid transaxle running smoothly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Hybrid system precautions apply: keep the vehicle OFF and do not press the brake pedal or power button while underneath.
  • Let the transaxle cool before draining. Hot fluid can burn you.
  • Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Do not overfill. The fluid level is set by overflow at the correct temperature.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm hex socket or Allen socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Fluid pump or hand pump
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Shop towels
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Toyota ATF WS transmission fluid - Qty: 4 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and engage the parking brake.
  • Let the vehicle sit long enough for the transaxle to cool.
  • Raise and support the front of the vehicle securely with jack stands.
  • Loosen the fill plug first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower cover

  • Use the 10mm socket and 12mm socket to remove the engine under cover fasteners and lower splash shield.
  • Set the hardware aside in order so it goes back in the same spots.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug

  • Use the 14mm hex socket to loosen the transmission fill plug first.
  • If the fill plug will not loosen, do not drain the fluid yet.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs) on reinstall.

Step 3: Drain the old fluid

  • Place the drain pan under the transaxle.
  • Use the 14mm hex socket to remove the drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely.
  • Replace the drain plug gasket with a new one.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs) on reinstall.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install the drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the torque wrench and 14mm hex socket to tighten it to spec.

Step 5: Fill with new ATF WS fluid

  • Use the fluid pump to pump Toyota ATF WS into the fill hole.
  • Keep filling until fluid starts to run back out of the fill opening.
  • Install a new fill plug gasket.
  • Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs) on reinstall.

Step 6: Set the final level

  • Start the vehicle only if needed to circulate fluid, then return it to OFF.
  • For the Prius V transaxle, the final level is correct when fluid is at the bottom edge of the fill port and just begins to dribble out.
  • If you opened the system at the wrong angle, lower the vehicle and recheck on level ground.

Step 7: Reinstall the under cover

  • Use the 10mm socket and 12mm socket to reinstall the splash shield and under cover.
  • Make sure all clips and bolts are fully seated.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and check for leaks at both plugs.
  • Take a short road test and listen for unusual noises.
  • Recheck for seepage after the test drive.
  • Dispose of old fluid properly at a recycling center.
