How to Change Transmission Fluid on a 2016 Lexus ES350 (Drain, Refill & Level-Set)
Step-by-step Toyota WS ATF service with required tools, parts, safety tips, fluid temp range, and torque specs
How to Change Transmission Fluid on a 2016 Lexus ES350 (Drain, Refill & Level-Set)
Step-by-step Toyota WS ATF service with required tools, parts, safety tips, fluid temp range, and torque specs
🔧 ES - Transmission Fluid Drain & Refill (Level-Set Procedure)
This service drains old transmission fluid, refills with the correct ATF, then sets the fluid level at a specific temperature. The level-setting step matters because an overfill or underfill can cause shifting/driveability issues and overheating.
Assumption: Your ES uses a temperature-based overflow/level-check method (common on late-model Lexus/Toyota).
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Support the car with jack stands on a level surface; never rely on a jack.
- 🧯 Transmission fluid can be hot; let the car cool and wear gloves/eye protection.
- ⚠️ The fluid level must be checked with the car level; an angled car gives a wrong level.
- 🔌 No battery disconnect is required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) x4

- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
- Trim clip removal tool
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet (3/8" drive)
- Torque wrench (10-80 Nm range)
- Hex bit socket set (5mm-10mm)
- Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
- OBD2 scan tool with live data ATF temperature (specialty)
- Shop rags
- Brake cleaner spray
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Lexus/Toyota-spec transmission fluid (Toyota WS equivalent) - Qty: 4-6 quarts
- Transmission drain plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
- Transmission fill plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
- Brake cleaner spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Plan to check/set the level with the vehicle perfectly level (all four corners on stands works best).
- Make sure your OBD2 scan tool can display ATF temperature (transmission fluid temperature).
- Open the fill plug first, before draining.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and level the car
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front, then place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) x4 so the car sits level.
- Use wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
Step 2: Remove the underbody splash shield
- Remove clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove bolts with a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Set the shield and hardware aside in order.
Step 3: Locate the fill and drain points
- Position a drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the transmission.
- Identify the fill plug (side of the transmission case) and the drain plug (bottom of the transmission case/pan area).
- Clean the area around plugs using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
Step 4: Remove the fill plug (do this before draining)
- Use the correct size from your hex bit socket set (5mm-10mm) with a ratchet (3/8" drive) to loosen and remove the fill plug.
- If it will not loosen, stop here (don’t drain yet).
Step 5: Drain the old fluid
- Remove the drain plug using your hex bit socket set (5mm-10mm) and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Clean the drain plug and install a new transmission drain plug gasket/washer.
- Reinstall the drain plug and torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Pump in new fluid (initial fill)
- Insert the hose from the fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill port.
- Pump in Lexus/Toyota-spec transmission fluid (Toyota WS equivalent) until fluid begins to dribble back out of the fill port.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight for now (you’ll reopen it during level setting).
Step 7: Warm the fluid and run through gears
- Plug in the OBD2 scan tool with live data ATF temperature (specialty) and display transmission fluid temperature.
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Slowly move the shifter through P-R-N-D and back, pausing 2-3 seconds in each position.
- Let the transmission warm until ATF reaches about 35-45°C (95-113°F).
Step 8: Set the fluid level (overflow/temperature method)
- With engine idling and the car level, remove the fill plug using a hex bit socket set (5mm-10mm) and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- If fluid does not run out, pump more fluid in using the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until it just begins to spill out.
- Let excess fluid drip until it becomes a thin stream/drip at the target temperature range.
- Install a new transmission fill plug gasket/washer, then reinstall the fill plug.
- Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reinstall bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8" drive).
- Reinstall clips using a trim clip removal tool.
Step 10: Lower the car and clean up
- Lower the car using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Wipe any residue with shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
✅ After Repair
- Take a 10-15 minute test drive and verify smooth engagement and no slipping.
- Park on a clean surface and check for leaks around the drain and fill plugs.
- Recheck for any drips the next morning.
- Dispose fluid at a recycling center.
