How to Change Transmission Fluid on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee (Sealed 9-Speed Service)
Step-by-step pan/filter service, fill procedure by temperature, required tools, parts, and torque specs

š§ Cherokee - Transmission Fluid & Pan/Filter Service
Your Cherokeeās automatic transmission is a āsealedā style unit, so thereās no dipstick tube to pour fluid into. The correct way is to drain the fluid, service the pan/filter (if equipped), then refill through the fill port while monitoring transmission fluid temperature.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2.5-4.0 hours
Assumption: your Cherokee uses the 9-speed sealed transmission (common on the 2.4L).
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work on a level surface; keep the vehicle supported on jack stands before going underneath.
- ā ļø Transmission fluid can be hot; let the drivetrain cool enough to avoid burns.
- ā ļø Keep the vehicle level front-to-rear and side-to-side during filling, or the fluid level check will be wrong.
- ā ļø Keep dirt out of the transmissionāclean around plugs before removal.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

š© Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (Mopar 8&9 Speed ATF equivalent) - Qty: 6-8 quarts
- Transmission pan with integrated filter - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Transmission drain plug seal/washer - Qty: 1
- Transmission fill plug seal/washer - Qty: 1
š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
- Raise the Cherokee with a floor jack and support it with jack stands so the vehicle sits level.
- Set up your scan tool with live data (a reader that can display transmission fluid temperature in real time) so you can watch TFT as you fill.
- Locate the transmission fill plug before draining. Tip: if you canāt fill it, donāt drain it.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release plastic push-clips.
- Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket (varies by fastener) to remove shield screws/bolts.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small tray.
Step 2: Locate and loosen the transmission fill plug first
- Clean the area around the fill plug using shop rags and brake cleaner spray.
- Place your drain pan under the area (a little fluid may drip).
- Use the correct Allen hex bit (commonly 6mm or 8mm) with a ratchet to crack the fill plug loose.
- If it wonāt loosen, stop here and do not drain yet. Tip: stuck fill plug = big headache.
Step 3: Drain the transmission fluid
- Position the drain pan under the transmission drain plug or pan edge (depending on design).
- If a drain plug is present, use the correct Allen hex bit with a ratchet to remove it.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Reinstall the drain plug with a new seal/washer and Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 4: Remove the transmission pan (and filter if integrated)
- Place the drain pan under the transmission pan (more fluid will spill).
- Use a 10mm socket (or T30 Torx bit on some pans) with a ratchet to remove the pan bolts.
- Support the pan with one hand as the last bolts come out, then lower it slowly.
- If the filter is part of the pan, remove the pan/filter as a unit.
Step 5: Clean mating surfaces and prepare the new pan/gasket
- Use shop rags and brake cleaner spray to clean the transmission case sealing surface.
- Do not scrape aggressively; avoid gouging the aluminum case.
- Install the new gasket onto the new pan (or verify the gasket is properly seated if itās pre-installed).
Step 6: Install the new pan/filter
- Lift the new pan into place and start all bolts by hand.
- Use a torque wrench (inch-pound) to tighten pan bolts in a crisscross pattern.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
Step 7: Initial refill through the fill port
- Make sure the drain plug is installed and torqued.
- Remove the fill plug fully using the correct Allen hex bit with a ratchet.
- Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) (a hand pump that pushes fluid up into a higher port) to pump ATF into the fill port.
- Pump until fluid begins to dribble out of the fill hole, then install the fill plug finger-tight for now.
Step 8: Warm up and cycle gears (critical for sealed level setting)
- Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
- Use your scan tool with live data (specialty) to monitor transmission fluid temperature (TFT).
- Slowly shift through P-R-N-D and back, pausing 2ā3 seconds in each gear to fill circuits.
- Keep the vehicle on stands and level; do not rev the engine.
Step 9: Final fluid level set at temperature
- With the engine idling, watch TFT on the scan tool.
- When TFT is in the normal service-check window (commonly 35ā45°C / 95ā113°F), remove the fill plug using the correct Allen hex bit.
- Use the fluid transfer pump to add fluid until it just starts to run out in a steady dribble.
- Let excess fluid slow to a light dribble, then install the fill plug with a new seal/washer.
- Tighten the fill plug and Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb).
- If you donāt have a scan tool, use an infrared thermometer on the transmission pan as a rough check, but the scan tool reading is the correct method.
Step 10: Reinstall the splash shield
- Reinstall the shield using the 8mm socket/10mm socket and the trim clip removal tool (to re-seat clips).
- Make sure no wiring or hoses are pinched.
ā After Repair
- With the Cherokee on the ground, take a 10ā15 minute test drive and verify normal shifting.
- Park on a clean surface and inspect for leaks around the pan, drain plug, and fill plug.
- Recheck for any stored transmission codes using the scan tool.
- Tip: keep the old fluid for a day, just in case.
