šŸ”§ SRX - Transmission Fluid Change

This service replaces old automatic transmission fluid to help protect the internal clutches and valves, and to improve shift quality. Your SRX transmission is ā€œsealedā€ (no dipstick), so the fluid level is set using a check/level plug at a specific fluid temperature.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: Your SRX uses the GM 6-speed automatic (Dexron-VI) with drain + level/check plugs.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on a level surface; support the SRX on jack stands before going underneath.
  • āš ļø Transmission fluid can be hot—wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • āš ļø Keep the SRX level while checking the fluid level (front-to-back and side-to-side).
  • āš ļø Engine will run during level check—keep hands/loose clothing away from belts/fans.
  • šŸ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 10-quart)
  • Socket set (8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm)
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Extension (3"-6")
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive, 5-50 ft-lbs)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (Dexron-VI) - Qty: 6-8 quarts
  • Drain plug seal/washer (if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Transmission oil pan gasket - Qty: 1 (only if pan is removed)
  • Transmission filter - Qty: 1 (only if pan is removed)

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the front and support with jack stands under the proper lift points; keep the SRX as level as possible.
  • Locate the transmission drain plug, fill plug, and level/check plug before draining.
  • A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that pushes new fluid into the fill port (since there’s no dipstick tube).
  • A torque wrench helps tighten bolts accurately so you don’t strip threads or cause leaks.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the underbody splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip remover to pop out plastic clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove any screws/bolts.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

Step 2: Loosen the fill plug first (important)

  • Before draining anything, make sure you can refill it.
  • Use the appropriate socket (typically 13mm or 15mm) and a ratchet to crack the fill plug loose, then snug it back by hand.
  • If it won’t loosen, stop here.

Step 3: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Place your drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use a 15mm socket with a ratchet to remove the drain plug.
  • Let it drain until it slows to a drip (usually 10-15 minutes).
  • Clean the drain plug with shop rags and brake cleaner spray.

Step 4: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Install a new drain plug seal/washer if your plug uses one.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten using a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Refill with new Dexron-VI

  • Remove the fill plug using the correct socket and ratchet.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump in Dexron-VI fluid.
  • Add about what drained out (commonly 4-6 quarts for a simple drain-and-fill).
  • Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight for now.

Step 6: Warm the transmission fluid to the level-check temperature

  • Start the engine.
  • With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D and back to P, pausing 2-3 seconds in each gear.
  • Let the engine idle until the transmission pan is warm; use an infrared thermometer to verify the pan is roughly 85-95°C (185-203°F).
  • Keep the SRX level on the stands.

Step 7: Set the fluid level using the level/check plug

  • With engine idling and SRX level, place the drain pan underneath the level/check plug.
  • Use the appropriate socket and ratchet to remove the level/check plug.
  • Correct level is when fluid dribbles out in a small steady stream, then slows to a drip.
  • If no fluid comes out, reinstall the check plug loosely, add fluid through the fill port using the fluid transfer pump (specialty), then re-check.
  • When level is correct, reinstall the level/check plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Tighten the fill plug and reinstall the splash shield

  • Tighten the fill plug using a torque wrench: Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket/10mm socket and trim clip remover.
  • Lower the SRX using the floor jack.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and check underneath for leaks around the drain, level/check, and fill plugs.
  • Test drive 10-15 minutes. Pay attention to shifting and any slipping or flares.
  • Park on level ground and recheck for leaks again.
  • Dispose of used ATF at a recycling center.
