Step-by-step service guide with tools, parts, torque specs, and fluid level check tips for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
🔧 Transmission Fluid Change - Service
This procedure drains the transmission pan, replaces the filter, and refills with the correct ATF for your 1500. On this truck, the fluid level must be set at the proper temperature, so the final check matters as much as the drain and refill.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Use jack stands on level ground. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Hot transmission fluid can burn skin. Let the truck cool before draining.
- Keep dirt out of the pan, valve body, and filler area.
- This transmission level must be checked at a specific fluid temperature.
- No battery disconnect is required for this service.
- Assumption: your truck has the 8-speed automatic transmission.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands
- Wheel chocks
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Metric socket set
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
- Torque wrench
- Drain pan
- Fluid transfer pump
- Funnel
- Brake cleaner
- Shop towels
- Scan tool or thermometer
- Flat scraper
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (ATF+4 / approved equivalent) - Qty: 5-7 quarts
- Transmission filter - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Drain plug seal - Qty: 1
- Transmission pan bolts - Qty: 1 set
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels.
- Raise the truck and support it securely on jack stands.
- Warm the transmission slightly with a short drive if the fluid is cold, then let it cool enough to handle.
- Have your scan tool ready to read transmission fluid temperature.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front, then support the truck with jack stands.
- Keep the truck level if possible. Level support helps the fluid level check later.
Step 2: Drain the transmission fluid
- Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Use the 8mm socket to remove the drain plug, if equipped.
- Let the fluid drain fully.
- If there is no drain plug, loosen the pan bolts with the 10mm socket and lower one corner slowly so the fluid drains in a controlled way.
Step 3: Remove the pan
- Use the 10mm socket to remove the pan bolts.
- Support the pan with one hand while removing the last bolts.
- Lower the pan carefully and pour the remaining fluid into the drain pan.
- Keep the pan level.
Step 4: Remove and replace the filter
- Pull the old filter straight down.
- If it resists, wiggle it gently by hand.
- Install the new filter by pushing it into place until fully seated.
- Make sure the old filter seal comes out with the filter.
Step 5: Clean the pan and magnet
- Use brake cleaner and shop towels to clean the pan.
- Clean the magnet and remove metal sludge.
- Inspect the pan for excessive debris or large metal pieces.
- If the gasket surface is dirty, clean it with a flat scraper carefully.
Step 6: Install the pan
- Place the new transmission pan gasket on the pan.
- Raise the pan into position by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand using the 10mm socket.
- Torque the pan bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- If equipped, install the drain plug with a new seal and torque it to 20 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add fresh transmission fluid
- Lower the truck enough to access the fill point safely, if needed.
- Use a funnel or fluid transfer pump to add ATF+4 / approved equivalent.
- Start with about 4-5 quarts, then add more as needed during the level check.
- Do not overfill yet. The final level must be set at the correct temperature.
Step 8: Warm up and check fluid level
- Start the engine and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the shifter slowly through all gear positions, pausing 2-3 seconds in each.
- Return to Park.
- Use a scan tool or thermometer to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- Check the level at the specified operating range: 50-60°C (122-140°F).
- Add fluid in small amounts until the level is correct.
- Check in small steps.
Step 9: Final tighten and leak check
- Inspect the pan gasket, drain plug, and case for leaks.
- Recheck torque on accessible bolts if needed.
- Lower the truck and road test it gently.
✅ After Repair
- Verify smooth shifts after the road test.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- Confirm the fluid level again at operating temperature if needed.
- If the transmission shifts oddly, recheck fluid level first.
