🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain & Refill

Your F-150 uses a sealed 6-speed automatic transmission, so the fluid change is done by draining the pan and refilling with the correct fluid. The final level must be checked at the correct fluid temperature, so a scan tool or live-temp reader is part of the job.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on level ground and keep the truck securely supported on jack stands if you need access underneath.
  • Hot transmission fluid can burn you. Let the transmission cool before draining.
  • Use only MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid.
  • The fluid level must be checked with the engine running and fluid at the correct temperature.
  • Do not overfill. Overfill can cause shifting problems and leaks.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 13mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid pump
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Scan tool with transmission temperature readout
  • Clean rags

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 13 quarts
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan drain plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels if the front of the truck is raised.
  • If you plan to replace the pan gasket, have the new gasket ready before draining.
  • Use a scan tool that shows transmission fluid temperature before the final level check.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the truck safely

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the truck.
  • Support it with jack stands (rated for truck weight) if needed for access.
  • Never work under a truck on a jack alone.

Step 2: Drain the transmission fluid

  • Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
  • Use the 8mm socket to remove the drain plug, if equipped, and let the fluid drain fully.
  • If your pan does not have a drain plug, carefully loosen the pan bolts with a 13mm socket and lower one side to control the drain.

Step 3: Remove and service the pan

  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the pan bolts.
  • Lower the pan slowly and keep it level.
  • Remove the old gasket and clean the pan mating surface with clean rags.
  • Replace the drain plug seal if the drain plug was removed.

Step 4: Reinstall the pan

  • Install the new transmission pan gasket.
  • Start all pan bolts by hand with the 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 11 Nm (97 ft-lbs).
  • Snug evenly to avoid pan warping.

Step 5: Fill with new fluid

  • Lower the truck if needed so it sits level.
  • Use a fluid pump and funnel to add fresh MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid through the fill port.
  • Add about the same amount you drained to start.
  • Do not guess the final level yet. The final check comes later at temperature.

Step 6: Warm the transmission and check level

  • Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
  • Use the scan tool with transmission temperature readout to watch fluid temp.
  • Move the shifter through each gear position, pausing a few seconds in each one.
  • Return the shifter to Park.
  • With the transmission at the correct fill-check temperature range, check the level at the fill/check port.
  • Add fluid in small amounts with the fluid pump until a thin stream or slight drip is seen at the correct level.

Step 7: Final inspection

  • Install the fill/check plug securely with the 8mm socket.
  • Inspect for leaks around the pan and drain plug.
  • Clean any spilled fluid from the transmission and underbody.

✅ After Repair

  • Road test the truck and verify smooth shifts.
  • Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
  • If shift quality feels off, recheck fluid level at the proper temperature.
  • If the fluid was badly burned or the transmission was slipping, further diagnosis may be needed.
