🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill

On your RAV4, a transmission fluid service is done by draining the old fluid and refilling with the correct Toyota-spec fluid. This is a maintenance service, not a flush, and the final level must be set with the fluid at the proper temperature.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the vehicle level and supported securely on jack stands.
  • Transmission fluid can be hot. Let the vehicle cool before opening the drain plug.
  • Use only the specified Toyota-type transmission fluid for this service.
  • Do not overfill. The final level must be checked at the correct fluid temperature.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 24mm socket
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel with long hose
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towels
  • Scan tool or infrared thermometer

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 4-6 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission fill plug gasket - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Warm the vehicle slightly with a short drive, then shut it off.
  • Raise and support the vehicle level on jack stands.
  • Keep the vehicle level for correct fill.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower splash shield

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower engine cover or splash shield fasteners.
  • Set the panel and hardware aside in order.

Step 2: Drain the old fluid

  • Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  • Use a 24mm socket to remove the transmission drain plug.
  • Let the fluid drain completely.
  • Install a new drain plug gasket.
  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand, then torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Remove the fill plug

  • Use a 24mm socket to remove the transmission fill plug.
  • This creates the opening needed to refill the transmission.

Step 4: Refill with new fluid

  • Use a fluid transfer pump and long-hose funnel setup to add fresh fluid through the fill hole.
  • Add fluid until it begins to slightly dribble from the fill opening.
  • Install a new fill plug gasket.
  • Reinstall the fill plug by hand, then torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Set the final fluid level

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • With the brake applied, slowly move the shifter through each gear position, then return to Park.
  • Use a scan tool or infrared thermometer to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • At the correct operating range, verify the fluid is just at the fill hole level.
  • If needed, add small amounts with the fluid transfer pump until it just begins to run out.
  • Only fine-tune the level in small amounts.

Step 6: Reinstall the splash shield

  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the lower cover.
  • Make sure all clips and fasteners are seated properly.

✅ After Repair

  • Check underneath for any leaks around the drain and fill plugs.
  • Take a short test drive and verify normal shifting.
  • Recheck for leaks after the drive.
  • Dispose of used transmission fluid at a proper recycling center.
