🔧 Escape - Transmission Fluid Change (Drain & Refill)

Your Escape uses a “sealed” automatic transmission (no dipstick), so the fluid level is set through a level/check plug at a specific fluid temperature. The job is mainly a drain-and-refill, then verifying the level at the correct temperature so you don’t underfill or overfill.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the Escape on jack stands before going under it.
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be very hot; wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ Keep the Escape level (front-to-back and side-to-side) when setting the final fluid level.
  • ⚠️ Engine must run during the level-setting step; keep hands/loose clothing away from moving parts.
  • ⚠️ Do not use “universal ATF.” Use MERCON LV only.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) - Qty: 4
  • Wheel chocks - Qty: 2
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • Socket set (8mm-15mm)
  • Torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • Trim clip remover
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty)
  • Shop rags
  • Brake cleaner spray

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (MERCON LV) - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug seal (if equipped) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the Escape and set it on 4 jack stands so it sits level.
  • You’ll need a way to watch transmission fluid temperature (TFT). An OBD2 scan tool is the easiest way (it reads live TFT).
  • Quick question (so I can match your exact fill/level method): do you have an OBD2 scan tool that can display Transmission Fluid Temp (TFT)?
  • Second quick question: are you doing a simple drain & refill (recommended DIY), not a full “machine flush”?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the transmission slightly

  • Drive 10–15 minutes so the transmission is warm (not scorching hot).
  • Park on level ground and leave the engine off for 2–3 minutes to let fluid settle.

Step 2: Lift and level the Escape

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front and rear, then support with jack stands.
  • Use wheel chocks to prevent any rolling.
  • Level is critical for correct fluid level.

Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip remover for push-pins and a socket set (8mm-10mm) for screws/bolts.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.

Step 4: Locate the transmission fill point and level/check plug

  • Find the transmission case fill point (where you’ll pump new fluid in).
  • Find the transmission fluid level/check plug on the transmission case (used to confirm final level).
  • If access is tight up top, use a socket set (8mm-10mm) to remove any necessary intake ducting.

Step 5: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • Position a drain pan under the transmission drain plug area.
  • Use a 3/8" drive ratchet or the appropriate socket to remove the drain plug and drain the fluid fully.
  • Clean the drain plug area with shop rags and brake cleaner spray.

Step 6: Reinstall the drain plug

  • Reinstall the drain plug by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
  • If your drain plug uses a seal/washer, replace it before torquing.

Step 7: Add new MERCON LV fluid (initial fill)

  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump in MERCON LV through the fill point.
  • Add about what you removed (most drain-and-refills are typically ~4–5 quarts).
  • Reinstall the fill plug snug for now (final check comes later).

Step 8: Circulate fluid through all gears

  • Start the engine with your foot on the brake.
  • Slowly move the shifter through P-R-N-D and back, pausing 2–3 seconds in each gear.
  • Let the engine idle.

Step 9: Set the final level at the correct temperature

  • Connect your OBD2 scan tool (specialty) and monitor TFT.
  • With the engine idling and the Escape level, remove the transmission level/check plug using the appropriate socket.
  • At 85–95°C (185–203°F) TFT, the level is correct when fluid dribbles out in a thin stream, then slows to a drip.
  • If no fluid comes out, use the fluid transfer pump (specialty) to add small amounts until it begins to dribble out.
  • If fluid pours out heavily, wait until it slows to a drip (do not overfill).
  • Reinstall the level/check plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the Escape

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a socket set (8mm-10mm) and trim clip remover for clips.
  • Lower the Escape using the floor jack.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive 10–15 minutes. Verify smooth shifting and no flare/slip.
  • Park on clean pavement and check for any drips under the transmission.
  • Recheck the level/check plug area for seepage after the test drive.
  • If you have a scan tool, check for transmission-related codes after the drive.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $45-$90 (parts only)

You Save: $160-$405 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-3.0 hours.
