🔧 Escape - Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

This service drains and refills the automatic transmission fluid in your Escape. The transmission does not have a traditional dipstick, so the final fluid level must be checked at the correct fluid temperature through the level check plug.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid gets hot. Let the vehicle cool before draining, then use gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚠️ The vehicle must be level when checking fluid level. An uneven vehicle can cause an incorrect fill.
  • ⚠️ Never run the engine with low transmission fluid.
  • ⚠️ Do not overfill. Overfilling can cause shifting problems and fluid foaming.
  • ⚠️ Use only the correct Ford-spec automatic transmission fluid for your Escape.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (8-quart minimum)
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 11mm socket
  • 8mm Allen socket
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound/low-range)
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb range)
  • Long-neck funnel
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • OBD2 scan tool with live data (specialty)
  • Infrared thermometer
  • Shop towels

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 5 quarts
  • Transmission drain plug seal - Qty: 1
  • Transmission level check plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Escape on a flat, level surface.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔥 If the vehicle was just driven, let the transmission cool until it is safe to touch nearby components.
  • 🔍 Confirm you have MERCON LV fluid. Do not mix fluid types.
  • 📟 An OBD2 scan tool reads vehicle data. For this job, it is used to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • 🌡️ Final level must be checked with the engine running and transmission fluid near operating check temperature, about 85-93°C (185-200°F).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Escape at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the approved front support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use the floor jack and jack stands to raise the rear if needed so the vehicle sits level.
  • Use wheel chocks to keep the vehicle from rolling.
  • Level vehicle equals accurate fluid level.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield

  • Use an 11mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower splash shield fasteners if equipped.
  • Set the splash shield and fasteners aside in order.
  • If fasteners are missing or damaged, replace them before driving.

Step 3: Locate the Drain Plug and Level Check Plug

  • Use the flashlight area from your work light or shop lighting to identify the transmission drain plug at the bottom of the transmission case.
  • Use the flashlight area to identify the level check plug on the side of the transmission case.
  • The level check plug is used to confirm correct fluid height when fluid just trickles out at the proper temperature.
  • Do not remove the level check plug yet.

Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid

  • Place the 8-quart drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
  • Use the 8mm Allen socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the drain plug.
  • Remove the drain plug by hand and let the fluid drain completely.
  • Inspect the old fluid. Dark fluid is common, but heavy metal flakes or a burnt smell may indicate internal wear.
  • Clean the drain plug with shop towels.

Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  • Install a new transmission drain plug seal onto the drain plug.
  • Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 8mm Allen socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Add Initial Fresh Fluid

  • Open the transmission fill cap at the top of the transmission.
  • Use a long-neck funnel to add about 3.5 quarts of MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid.
  • Install the fill cap loosely for now.
  • Do not add the full 5 quarts at once. Final level must be checked.

Step 7: Warm the Fluid and Shift Through Gears

  • Connect the OBD2 scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver side of the dash.
  • Use the OBD2 scan tool live data menu to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • Start the engine while keeping your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
  • Use the gear selector to move slowly through P-R-N-D-S, pausing 3 seconds in each position.
  • Return the gear selector to P.
  • Keep the engine idling for the level check.

Step 8: Check Fluid Level at Correct Temperature

  • When the scan tool shows transmission fluid temperature near 85-93°C (185-200°F), keep the engine idling.
  • Place the drain pan under the level check plug.
  • Use the correct socket for the level check plug. On this Escape, use the 8mm Allen socket if fitted.
  • Carefully remove the level check plug.
  • If fluid flows out in a heavy stream, let it drain until it becomes a thin trickle.
  • If no fluid comes out, the level is low. Add MERCON LV fluid in small amounts using the long-neck funnel or fluid transfer pump until fluid just begins to trickle from the level check opening.
  • A thin trickle means correct level.

Step 9: Reinstall the Level Check Plug

  • Install a new transmission level check plug seal.
  • Thread the level check plug in by hand first.
  • Use the 8mm Allen socket and torque wrench to tighten the level check plug.
  • Torque to 11 Nm (97 in-lbs)
  • Use shop towels to clean spilled fluid from the transmission case.

Step 10: Reinstall the Splash Shield

  • Position the lower splash shield back under your Escape.
  • Use the 11mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the splash shield fasteners.
  • Tighten the fasteners snugly by hand tool only.
  • No critical torque spec applies to the splash shield fasteners.

Step 11: Lower the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Escape slowly to the ground.
  • Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully on the ground.

Step 12: Road Test

  • Drive your Escape gently for 10-15 minutes.
  • Check that shifts feel smooth and normal.
  • Park on level ground and look underneath for leaks.
  • If you see leaks, turn the engine OFF and inspect the drain plug and level check plug areas.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Dispose of old automatic transmission fluid at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used fluid.
  • ✅ Recheck underneath after the next drive for any seepage around the plugs.
  • ✅ No battery registration, programming, or adaptive reset is required for a simple drain-and-fill.
  • ✅ If the fluid was very dark, a second drain-and-fill after a few hundred miles can refresh more of the old fluid.
