🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain & Fill
On your Equinox, the transmission uses a sealed-style fluid service process, so the fluid level is checked at a specific temperature with the vehicle running. The job is straightforward, but getting the level right matters a lot for shift quality and transmission life.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- The transmission fluid can be hot. Wear gloves and safety glasses.
- Keep the vehicle level during the level-check step.
- Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
- Do not overfill. Overfilled transmission fluid can cause shifting issues and foaming.
- A scan tool is required to read transmission fluid temperature for final level check.
- If your Equinox has an undertray, remove it carefully before draining.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (Dexron VI) - Qty: 6-8 quarts
- Transmission drain plug seal - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Let the transmission warm slightly, but do not work on a very hot drivetrain.
- Raise and support the vehicle level on jack stands.
- Have the scan tool ready before you start the final fill check.
- Keep the engine off for draining and refilling, then run it only for the level check.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and secure the vehicle
- Use the floor jack and jack stands to lift the vehicle level.
- Set wheel chocks at the tires still on the ground.
- Remove the lower splash shield if it blocks access to the transmission pan.
Step 2: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Use the correct metric socket or ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Replace the drain plug seal with a new one.
- Reinstall the drain plug and Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Refill the transmission
- Locate the fill plug on the transmission case.
- Use the correct metric socket to remove the fill plug.
- Use the fluid transfer pump to add Dexron VI transmission fluid.
- Add fluid until it begins to slightly run back out of the fill opening.
- Install the fill plug loosely for the level check.
Step 4: Set the final fluid level
- Start the engine and keep the vehicle level.
- Use the scan tool to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- With the engine running, cycle the shifter slowly through all gear positions, then return to Park.
- When fluid temperature is in the proper check range, remove the fill plug again.
- Add or remove fluid as needed until a thin stream or steady drip is present at the fill opening.
- Reinstall the fill plug and Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
Step 5: Reassemble and inspect
- Reinstall the splash shield with the correct socket or fasteners.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Check for leaks around both plugs.
✅ After Repair
- Test drive gently and confirm normal shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after the drive.
- If you notice harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or slipping, the fluid level may need to be rechecked.
- Dispose of used fluid properly at a recycling center.
