🔧 Highlander - Transmission Fluid Replacement
Your Highlander Hybrid uses Toyota hybrid transaxle fluid, not a traditional automatic transmission service. This job drains and refills the hybrid transaxle with the correct Toyota fluid, then verifies the level through the fill plug.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface. Fluid level is checked by the fill hole, so the vehicle must sit level.
- ⚠️ Do not open or touch orange high-voltage cables. Orange cables are part of the hybrid high-voltage system.
- ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Transmission fluid can irritate skin and eyes.
- ⚠️ Support your Highlander with jack stands before going underneath. Never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Always remove the fill plug before the drain plug. This prevents draining the fluid and then discovering the fill plug is stuck.
- ⚠️ Use only Toyota ATF WS or equivalent fluid meeting Toyota WS specification.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this drain-and-fill service if you do not disturb hybrid electrical components.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on a flat, level surface.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🚗 Raise the front of your Highlander with a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- 🛑 Support it securely with jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- 📏 Keep the vehicle level. If you raise the front, raise the rear to match using safe lift points and jack stands.
- 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- 🌡️ This service is best done with the transaxle warm, not hot. Warm fluid drains better, but hot fluid can burn you.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Lower Underbody Shield
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the lower shield bolts.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to remove any plastic clips.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in order.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Locate the Fill and Drain Plugs
- Look at the hybrid transaxle case on the driver-side/front area underneath your Highlander.
- The fill plug is higher on the transaxle case.
- The drain plug is lower on the transaxle case.
- Clean around both plugs with shop towels so dirt does not enter the transaxle.
Step 3: Remove the Fill Plug First
- Use a 24mm socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to loosen the fill plug.
- Remove the fill plug and old gasket by hand.
- If the fill plug does not loosen, stop. Do not drain the fluid until the fill plug can be removed.
- Fill plug first, always.
Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid
- Place a drain pan rated 8-quart minimum under the drain plug.
- Use a 10mm hex bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain until it slows to a drip.
- Inspect the old fluid for metal flakes or a burnt smell.
- A light gray paste on the magnetic drain plug is normal wear material.
Step 5: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Clean the drain plug with shop towels.
- Install a new transmission drain plug gasket on the drain plug.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm hex bit socket and torque wrench rated 20-80 Nm.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Refill the Transaxle
- Insert the hose from a fluid transfer pump (specialty) into the fill hole.
- Pump Toyota ATF WS transmission fluid into the transaxle.
- Stop when fluid begins to trickle steadily out of the fill hole.
- The approximate refill amount is about 3.7 quarts, but the correct level is when fluid just runs out of the fill hole with the vehicle level.
- Level vehicle equals correct level.
Step 7: Install the Fill Plug
- Install a new transmission fill plug gasket on the fill plug.
- Thread the fill plug in by hand first.
- Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench rated 20-80 Nm.
- Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Clean and Reinstall the Underbody Shield
- Wipe spilled fluid from the transaxle case using shop towels.
- Reinstall the lower shield by hand-positioning it first.
- Use a plastic trim clip remover to reinstall reusable clips, or install new clips if damaged.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall shield bolts.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for typical small underbody shield bolts.
Step 9: Lower the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Highlander slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly and safely.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Highlander and place it in READY mode.
- 🚗 With your foot on the brake, shift slowly through Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive, then return to Park.
- 🔍 Check underneath for leaks at the fill and drain plugs.
- 🚘 Take a short 5-10 minute test drive.
- 🔍 Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- ♻️ Recycle the old transmission fluid at an auto parts store or recycling center.
