🔧 Malibu - Transmission Fluid Change (Info Needed)

Your Malibu can have more than one automatic transmission design, and the correct fluid type, fill/check method, and torque specs depend on which one is in your car. Once we confirm the transmission, I can give you exact, trim-correct steps (including level-check temperature and torque specs).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level surface; support the car with jack stands (never the jack alone).
  • ⚠️ Transmission fluid can be very hot; let the car cool before opening any plugs.
  • ⚠️ Keep the engine off unless a step specifically says “engine running” for level checking.
  • ⚠️ If you must run the engine while raised, keep wheels off the ground and stay clear of rotating parts.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum, pair)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop rags
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Flashlight
  • OBD-II scan tool with live data (specialty)
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (3/8" drive)
  • Socket set (metric, 8mm-15mm)
  • Ratchet (3/8" drive)
  • Extension set (3" and 6")

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid (correct GM spec for your transmission) - Qty: TBD
  • Drain plug seal/washer (if equipped) - Qty: 1
  • Fill plug seal/washer (if equipped) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Malibu on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Plan to raise and support the front of the car so it sits level. Use a floor jack and jack stands.
  • You’ll need a scan tool that can read Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT). TFT is the temperature used to set the fluid level accurately.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which transmission you have

  • Open the hood and look for the emissions/underhood label and any service labels; take a clear photo if you see a transmission code.
  • Safely raise the front of the car using a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the transmission case from underneath and note whether you see: a traditional pan with many small bolts, or a different case style with distinct fill/level plugs.
  • Send a photo of the pan and any plugs.

Step 2: Confirm the service type you want

  • Reply with which you want: Drain-and-fill (replaces part of the fluid) or full fluid exchange (replaces nearly all fluid, usually with a machine).
  • For DIY at home, most owners do a drain-and-fill; a full exchange is usually shop equipment.

Step 3: Reply with these two answers so I can give exact steps + torque specs

  • Tell me: Is your Malibu a 9-speed or 6-speed automatic? (If you’re not sure, send the underside photo and I’ll identify it.)
  • Tell me: Drain-and-fill or full exchange?

âś… After Repair

  • Once confirmed, I’ll include the correct fluid level-check procedure, which may require checking level at a specific TFT range using your OBD-II scan tool.
  • I’ll also include a short road test routine and leak check points specific to your Malibu’s transmission.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: TBD (depends on 6-speed vs 9-speed, and service type)

DIY Cost: TBD (depends on exact fluid spec and quantity)

You Save: TBD once transmission/service type is confirmed

Once you confirm 6-speed vs 9-speed, I’ll price it accurately.
