Assumption: This is the standard automatic transmission service with pan drop, filter replacement, and refill on your Silverado.

🔧 Transmission Fluid Service - Fluid Change

This service replaces old transmission fluid, the filter, and the pan gasket so the transmission can shift smoothly and stay protected. On your Silverado, the safest DIY method is a pan drop service rather than a simple drain-and-fill because it lets you replace the filter and inspect for debris.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level surface with the parking brake set and the transmission in Park.
  • The fluid and pan may be hot if the truck was recently driven. Let it cool first.
  • Use jack stands under the frame. Do not rely on a floor jack alone.
  • Keep dirt out of the transmission. Clean the area before opening the pan.
  • Do not overfill. Incorrect fluid level can cause shifting problems or damage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated for truck weight)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Basic metric socket set
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Gasket scraper
  • Shop towels
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission fluid, Dexron VI - Qty: 6-7 quarts
  • Transmission filter - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan seal washers - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and chock the rear wheels.
  • Raise the truck safely and support it with jack stands.
  • Warm fluid drains faster, but do not work on a hot transmission.
  • Have the new filter, gasket, and fluid ready before opening the pan.
  • No infotainment or scan tool steps are needed for this service.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise and secure the truck

  • Use a floor jack to lift the truck and support it with jack stands.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
  • Never work under a vehicle on a jack alone.

Step 2: Drain the transmission pan

  • Place a drain pan under the transmission pan.
  • Use a 13mm socket to loosen the pan bolts, starting at the rear and working forward.
  • Let one corner drop slowly so the fluid drains in a controlled way.
  • Remove the pan completely and set it aside.

Step 3: Remove and inspect the pan

  • Use a gasket scraper and shop towels to clean the pan and mating surface.
  • Check the pan for metal particles or heavy clutch debris.
  • Clean the magnet in the pan if equipped.
  • A light gray paste is normal.

Step 4: Replace the filter

  • Use a 10mm socket if needed to remove the filter retaining bolts.
  • Pull the old filter straight down and remove the old seal if it stays in the case.
  • Install the new filter firmly into place.
  • Make sure the seal seats fully and is not pinched.

Step 5: Install the pan gasket and pan

  • Position the new transmission pan gasket on the pan.
  • Raise the pan into place by hand and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket to snug the bolts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 6: Refill with fluid

  • Lower the truck if needed to make filling easier, but keep it level.
  • Use a funnel and add Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid through the fill tube.
  • Start with about 5 quarts, then add more slowly.
  • Do not fully fill yet.

Step 7: Run the transmission and set the level

  • Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
  • Move the shifter through each gear position, pausing 2-3 seconds in each one.
  • Return to Park and leave the engine idling.
  • Check the fluid level with the dipstick and add fluid in small amounts until it reaches the proper hot range.
  • Add slowly. Overfilling is easy.

Step 8: Final leak check

  • Inspect the pan gasket and drain area for leaks.
  • Lower the truck and take a short test drive.
  • Recheck the fluid level with the engine idling on level ground.

✅ After Repair

  • Test drive the truck and confirm smooth shifts.
  • Check for leaks after the drive and again the next day.
  • If the fluid was badly burned or dark, a second fluid service may help.
  • Dispose of used ATF properly at a recycling center or parts store.
