🔧 Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill
This service replaces the automatic transmission fluid in your Tacoma with fresh Toyota WS ATF. The transmission has no dipstick, so the fluid level is set by temperature and overflow fill procedure.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a level surface. Fluid level checking depends on the truck being level.
- The transmission fluid can be hot. Let the truck cool before draining.
- Use jack stands if you lift the truck. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- Do not overfill. Too much fluid can cause shifting problems and leaks.
- No battery disconnect is required for this service.

- Transmission fill plug gasket - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Chock the rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the truck only if needed for access, then support it with jack stands.
- Warm the transmission slightly with a short drive, then let it cool enough to handle safely.
- Have the new fluid and pump ready before opening the transmission.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the fill plug first
- Use a 24mm socket to loosen the transmission fill plug before draining anything.
- This confirms you can refill the transmission later.
- Never drain first if you cannot refill.
Step 2: Drain the old fluid
- Place the drain pan under the transmission.
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the drain plug.
- Let the fluid drain completely.
- Replace the drain plug gasket with a new one.
- Install the drain plug and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Refill with fresh fluid
- Use the fluid transfer pump to pump Toyota WS ATF into the fill hole.
- Fill until fluid just begins to trickle back out of the fill opening.
- Install the fill plug loosely for now.
Step 4: Set the fluid level
- Start the engine and keep the truck level.
- Use the scan tool or OBD-II temperature reader to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
- With the engine running, cycle slowly through each gear position, then return to Park.
- When fluid temperature is in the proper check range, remove the fill plug with the 24mm socket.
- Add fluid if needed until it just dribbles from the fill hole.
- Install the fill plug with a new gasket and Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).
- A small drip means the level is correct.
Step 5: Clean up and inspect
- Wipe away any spilled fluid with shop towels.
- Check both plugs for leaks.
- Lower the truck if it was raised.
✅ After Repair
- Road test the truck for smooth shifting.
- Recheck for leaks after the test drive.
- If shift quality feels off, recheck the fluid level using the temperature-based fill procedure.
- Dispose of used fluid properly at a recycling center.
