🔧 1500 - Transmission Fluid & Filter Service

This service drains the old automatic transmission fluid and replaces the filter (often part of the pan assembly on this transmission). Fresh fluid helps prevent slipping, harsh shifting, and early transmission wear—especially if you tow or drive in heavy traffic.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: Your 1500 has the 845RE 8-speed automatic; steps match that setup.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Work on a level surface and support the truck on jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • 🔥 Transmission fluid can be hot—wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⚖️ The fluid level is temperature-sensitive; you must keep the truck level while filling.
  • 🔄 Keep the engine running only when instructed; keep hands/clothes clear of moving parts.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (10-quart minimum)
  • Shop towels
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension (3/8" drive)
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 8mm hex bit socket
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound)
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb)
  • Fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty)
  • Scan tool with transmission temperature data (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 8-speed automatic transmission fluid (Mopar 8&9 Speed ATF equivalent) - Qty: 7 quarts
  • Transmission pan with integrated filter - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan bolts (if required by kit) - Qty: 1 set
  • Fill plug seal/washer (if required by kit) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
  • Warm the transmission by driving 10–15 minutes so the fluid drains better.
  • Raise the truck with a floor jack and support it with jack stands so it sits level front-to-rear.
  • Connect your scan tool and confirm you can view transmission fluid temperature (this is the temp of the fluid inside the transmission).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Locate the fill plug and “crack it loose” first

  • Place the drain pan (10-quart minimum) under the transmission.
  • Find the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case.
  • Use an 8mm hex bit socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the fill plug (don’t remove it all the way yet).
  • If the fill plug won’t loosen, stop here.

Step 2: Drain the old transmission fluid

  • If your pan has a drain plug, remove it with the correct socket/hex using a 3/8" drive ratchet and let it drain fully.
  • If your pan does not have a drain plug, use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to loosen the pan bolts a few turns, leaving a few bolts snug on one end.
  • Slowly lower one corner of the pan so fluid pours into the drain pan (10-quart minimum).

Step 3: Remove the transmission pan

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and 6" extension (3/8" drive) to remove the remaining pan bolts.
  • Carefully lower the pan—more fluid will spill, so keep the drain pan underneath.
  • Wipe the transmission mating surface with shop towels and brake cleaner spray (clean and dry; no lint).

Step 4: Transfer magnets (if equipped) and install the new pan/filter

  • If there are magnets in the old pan, move them to the same locations in the new pan (magnets catch metal dust).
  • Position the new pan/filter and start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten pan bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lb)

Step 5: Pre-fill the transmission

  • Remove the fill plug fully using an 8mm hex bit socket and 3/8" drive ratchet.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) to pump 8-speed automatic transmission fluid into the fill hole until it begins to run back out.
  • Reinstall the fill plug finger-tight with the 8mm hex bit socket (just snug for now).

Step 6: Set the fluid level at the correct temperature

  • Start the engine and keep your foot on the brake.
  • With the engine idling, slowly shift through P-R-N-D, pausing 2–3 seconds in each position, then return to P.
  • Use the scan tool with transmission temperature data (specialty) to monitor transmission fluid temperature.
  • When fluid temp is in the target range, remove the fill plug with the 8mm hex bit socket.
  • Target range: 30–50°C (86–122°F)
  • With the engine idling, use the fluid transfer pump (hand pump) (specialty) to add fluid until it flows out as a thin steady stream, then wait until it becomes a slow drip.
  • Install the fill plug using the 8mm hex bit socket and tighten with a ft-lb torque wrench.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lb)

Step 7: Clean up and reinstall any covers

  • Spray any spilled fluid off the case with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
  • If you removed any shields/skid plates, reinstall them using the same sockets you removed them with (commonly 13mm socket).

âś… After Repair

  • With the engine running, look under the truck for leaks at the pan and fill plug.
  • Take a 10–15 minute test drive. Verify smooth shifting in normal driving.
  • Park on level ground and recheck for leaks again.
  • Dispose of used ATF at a recycling center.
