How to Change Transmission Fluid & Filter on a 2016 GMC Savana 2500 (DEXRON-VI)
Step-by-step sealed 6-speed ATF service with tools, parts list, fill/level plug procedure, and torque specs

🔧 Savana - Transmission Fluid & Filter Service
This service drains the old ATF from the transmission pan, replaces the filter, and refills the correct amount of fresh fluid. On your Savana, there is typically no dipstick, so the fluid level is set through a fill/level plug at a specific fluid temperature.
Assumption: Your Savana uses the GM 6-speed “sealed” automatic (6L80/6L90-style) with a pan drain and side fill/level plug.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a level surface and support the van with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ ATF can be hot and can burn you; wear gloves and safety glasses.
- ⚠️ You will set the final level with the engine running—keep hands/clothes clear of the driveshaft and exhaust.
- ⚠️ Chock the rear wheels; keep your foot off the throttle during the level-check.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this service.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
- Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

- Socket set (metric)
- 13mm socket
- 15mm socket
- 3/8" ratchet
- 6" extension (3/8" drive)
- Torque wrench (5-50 Nm range)
- 8mm hex bit socket
- Plastic scraper
- Brake cleaner spray
- Shop rags
- Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
- OBD2 scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty)
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Automatic transmission fluid (DEXRON-VI) - Qty: 7 quarts
- Transmission filter kit with pan gasket - Qty: 1
- Drain plug gasket/washer - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Warm the transmission slightly with a 10–15 minute drive so the fluid drains easier.
- Plan to use an OBD2 scan tool to watch transmission fluid temperature (often shown as “TFT”). This prevents over/under-filling.
- Lift the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands. Keep the van as level as possible for accurate filling.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Get set up safely
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Position a drain pan (10-liter minimum) under the transmission pan.
Step 2: Drain the transmission pan
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the pan drain plug (if equipped).
- Let the ATF drain fully into the drain pan.
- Reinstall the drain plug using a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 3: Remove the transmission pan
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and extension to remove the pan bolts.
- Leave 2 bolts loosely threaded at one end, then carefully tilt the pan to drain any leftover fluid into the drain pan.
- Remove the last bolts and lower the pan.
Step 4: Replace the filter
- Pull the old filter straight down by hand. (It may take a firm tug.)
- Remove the old filter seal/O-ring if it stayed in the transmission case using a plastic scraper.
- Install the new filter from your filter kit, pushing it in until fully seated.
- Filter “seal” is the rubber ring that prevents leaks.
Step 5: Clean the pan and install the gasket
- Clean the pan and magnet(s) using brake cleaner spray and shop rags.
- Clean the mating surface with a plastic scraper and shop rags. Do not gouge the aluminum.
- Place the new pan gasket from the filter kit onto the pan.
Step 6: Reinstall the transmission pan
- Start all pan bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a 13mm socket.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 7: Add initial fluid (engine OFF)
- Locate the transmission fill/level plug on the side of the transmission.
- Use an 8mm hex bit socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the fill/level plug.
- Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump DEXRON-VI ATF into the fill hole until fluid just starts to trickle back out.
- Reinstall the plug finger-tight for now using the 8mm hex bit socket.
- A transfer pump pushes fluid “uphill” into the transmission.
Step 8: Set the final fluid level (engine RUNNING, at temperature)
- Lower the van enough so it remains safely on jack stands but stays level.
- Connect your OBD2 scan tool (specialty) and monitor transmission fluid temperature (TFT).
- Start the engine. With your foot on the brake, move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D and back to P to fill passages.
- With the engine idling, remove the fill/level plug using the 8mm hex bit socket.
- When TFT is 35–45°C (95–113°F), pump ATF in using the fluid transfer pump until it dribbles out as a thin steady stream.
- Wait until it slows to a light drip, then reinstall the plug and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Clean up and check for leaks
- Spray any spilled ATF off the case/pan with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.
- With the engine still idling, visually inspect around the pan gasket and fill plug for leaks.
✅ After Repair
- Road test 10–15 minutes, then park on a level surface and re-check for leaks underneath.
- Shifts should feel smooth. If you notice slipping, flare (RPM jumps), or delayed engagement, stop driving and recheck the fluid level procedure.
- Dispose of old ATF responsibly (most parts stores accept used fluid).
