šŸ”§ Express - Transmission Fluid & Filter Change

This service replaces the fluid in the transmission pan and the internal filter. It helps prevent slipping, harsh shifting, and overheating by keeping the fluid clean and at the correct level.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

Assumption: your Express has the GM 6-speed automatic (6L80/6L90) using Dexron-VI and a pan-mounted filter.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on level ground and support the van with jack stands before getting underneath.
  • āš ļø Transmission fluid can be very hot—let the van cool and wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • āš ļø Chock the rear wheels and set the parking brake before lifting.
  • āš ļø The final level check is done with the engine running—keep hands, tools, and clothing away from moving parts.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this service.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Drain pan (at least 12-quart)
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Socket set (8mm-15mm)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound, 50-250 in-lb)
  • Torque wrench (ft-lb, 10-80 ft-lb)
  • Trim/pick tool
  • Plastic scraper
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Shop towels
  • Fluid transfer pump (specialty)
  • Scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Automatic transmission filter - Qty: 1
  • Transmission pan gasket - Qty: 1
  • Dexron-VI automatic transmission fluid - Qty: 6 quarts

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Express on a level surface and let the drivetrain cool.
  • Chock the rear wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Raise the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands. Keep the van as level as possible (front and rear level is best for accurate fluid level).
  • Set up your drain pan and have brake cleaner spray and shop towels ready.
  • A fluid transfer pump is a hand pump that lets you push fluid into the transmission through a side plug.
  • A scan tool lets you read transmission fluid temperature (TFT), which is required for the final level check.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Warm the transmission slightly

  • Drive 5-10 minutes so fluid will drain better (not fully hot).
  • Park on level ground and leave the engine off for a few minutes.

Step 2: Locate the transmission pan and plugs

  • Slide under the van with safety glasses on and identify the transmission pan.
  • Find the side fill plug and the side level/check plug on the transmission case (both are on the passenger side area on most 6-speed units).
  • Tip: Loosen fill plug first.

Step 3: Confirm the fill plug will loosen

  • Place the drain pan underneath.
  • Use a ratchet (3/8") and the appropriate socket to crack the fill plug loose (do not remove it yet).
  • If the fill plug is stuck, stop here—don’t drain the pan until you know you can refill.

Step 4: Drain the pan (and remove the pan)

  • Position the drain pan under the rear edge of the transmission pan.
  • Use a ratchet (3/8") and appropriate socket to remove the pan bolts around the perimeter, leaving 2 bolts loosely threaded at the front.
  • Carefully tilt the pan down at the rear so fluid pours into the drain pan.
  • Remove the last bolts with the ratchet (3/8") and lower the pan.

Step 5: Remove and replace the transmission filter

  • Use your hands to pull the old filter straight down.
  • If the filter seal stays stuck up in the transmission, use a trim/pick tool to carefully remove it (don’t scratch the bore).
  • Install the new filter by pushing it up firmly until it seats fully.

Step 6: Clean the pan and install the new gasket

  • Spray the pan clean with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
  • Clean the pan magnet(s) and reinstall them in the same location.
  • Use a plastic scraper to remove any stuck gasket material (avoid metal scrapers that gouge).
  • Place the new gasket on the pan.

Step 7: Reinstall the pan and torque the bolts

  • Start all pan bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern using a ratchet (3/8").
  • Final tighten using an inch-pound torque wrench: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb).

Step 8: Add initial fluid through the fill plug

  • Remove the fill plug fully using a ratchet (3/8") and appropriate socket.
  • Use a fluid transfer pump (specialty) to pump Dexron-VI automatic transmission fluid into the fill port.
  • Add about 4-5 quarts as a starting point (a pan drop typically takes around this much).
  • Reinstall the fill plug snug for now using a ratchet (3/8").

Step 9: Run the shifter to fill the circuits

  • With the van still safely supported on jack stands, start the engine.
  • Hold the brake pedal and move the shifter slowly through P-R-N-D, pausing 3 seconds in each, then back to P.
  • Leave the engine idling.

Step 10: Set the final fluid level at the correct temperature

  • Connect your scan tool that reads transmission fluid temperature (specialty) and monitor TFT.
  • Target temperature window: 30°C to 50°C (86°F to 122°F).
  • With engine idling and the van level, place the drain pan under the level/check plug.
  • Use a ratchet (3/8") and appropriate socket to remove the level/check plug.
  • Correct level behavior in the temp window:
  • If fluid drips or a thin stream comes out, the level is OK. Let it slow to a drip.
  • If no fluid comes out, remove the fill plug and add Dexron-VI using the fluid transfer pump (specialty) until it begins to drip from the level/check hole.
  • Reinstall the level/check plug and tighten with a ft-lb torque wrench: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lb).
  • Reinstall the fill plug and tighten with a ft-lb torque wrench: Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft-lb).
  • Tip: Too hot = wrong reading.

āœ… After Repair

  • Wipe everything clean and spray-check for fresh leaks after a short drive.
  • Road test 10-15 minutes, then recheck underneath for seepage around the pan and plugs.
  • Dispose of used fluid properly (most parts stores accept used ATF).
  • If shifts feel abnormal, recheck the level using the same temperature window.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$650 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $90-$180 (parts only)

You Save: $260-$470 by doing it yourself!
